Please tell us a little bit about your hardware. Share the output of the following command run from the terminal. You can copy text to/from the terminal, see Its edit menu.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Also, when it freezes see if you can reset X with Ctrl+Ald+Backspace. if that doesn't work, if you can still access the virtual terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1?

After a freeze and a reboot, access your /var/log/syslog or /var/log/syslog.1 file. Scroll to the date & time of the freeze and see if there are any errors reported there.

Hi, I am having the same problem. It seems to be at different times ( several hours or several minutes when it occurs. I am not sure what applications are open when it happens. I know it has happened when Firefox was opened but other times I am not sure ( since I leave my machine on ). I am running 32 bit and like others have mentioned, keyboard and mouse all become unresponsive.

what i did was uninstall gnome-classic and fallback,so,i only have cinnamon and cinnamon 2d as desktops, removed most of my unused programs, and it seems to work fine now.oh and i am running 32bit instead of 64bit.dont know if the 64bit is the problem, but,it seems a bit buggy to me.32 runs better.

I have a fresh install and beside Skype and a game that I have installed for one of my kids, ther's no other software on the machine for the moment (and I will not install anything untill I will be sure that I will keep it on Mint; if I will not be able to resolve the issue within next days I will give up Mint).

I have cinnamon on 32bit.
What I would like to point is that the system freeze even thou is just a fresh install with no other software installed.
Today the system did it again! There were open just Firefos and a game - Hedgewars toghether with Skype and Pidgin.

This is not a solution for the issue! ;)

I have created a bug for this.

Maybe you can add a comment to show that I'm not the only one affected by the issue. Let's see if we get some answers over there!

i am not running 64bit cinnamon anymore so i have not searched for a solution.i do know that 32bit didnt freeze up on me and nor does the 64bit KDE.hopefully someone will get a result for those who have the 64bit version of cinnamon.
p.s. try mate x64 edition then install cinnamon i dont think there is any freezes that way.not too sure

Hi, I am running Maya XFCE 64bit on an Acer and have the same problem. Plugging or unplugging the charger seems to trigger the problem.

I'm having the same problem on my new Acer laptop. Fresh install from linuxmint-14.1-cinnamon-dvd-64bit.iso, and the problem seems to occur randomly when not doing anything on the computer. Also, I have had it freeze when connecting the power to the laptop, but that doesn't always trigger it. I will be following this issue here and on the bug tracker (https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1098117). I'm determined to find a solution, and will post more if I find anything useful.

i think it has something to do with the kernel.i might not be right, but,it seems that way with ubuntu 12.10 and mint 14.i am dual-booted and just for me to reach grub it takes about a good 20 seconds.i rolled back to mint 13 cinnamon and it goes into grub normally now.so try rolling back the kernel and see what happens.

The Latest is (NOT?) the Greatest.

Quidsup has authored many videos on YouTube.
In 3 of which he says that Mint 14 and its Daddy.
Ubuntu 12.10 have serious issues.

"Linux Mint 14 Review - Minty Fall"
"Ubuntu 12.10 Final Release Review - Huge Disappointment"
"Best and Worst Linux Distros of 2012"

While Quidsup feels that Ubuntu 12.04 is a top runner.
12.10's kernel is bad and therefore unstable.
Also apparently 12.10's kernel can't be changed. Curious!!!
He says the same about Ubuntu 12.10 offspring, Mint 14.

What do you think?

I'm staying with Mint 13 xfce. KISS.

Re: (SOLVED)mint 14 freezing up?? a lot and my system locks

Post by podagee »

the solution to this would be to either rollback or deal with the issues in ubuntu 12.10,since its kernel is not stable as they say.technology is upgrading everyday so the team who makes the kernels are constantly changing it.the term "dont fix it if it aint broke," falls into play here."Linus Torvaldi" created the linux kernel,im sure there were problems, but, none like these newer ones.my opinion is the 2.6.xx kernels were perfect, they were compatible, quicker, and more stable.when people alter a few things thats when things go wrong, just like the bible.certain things run fine the way they are.almost wiped linux clear off my computer to make it completely windows 8,but,had a feeling it was the kernel.
so for those who want it always newer, what is wrong with waiting till all the kinks get completely worked out?just rollback.use virtualbox more often so you can see the finished products stability.

just found this:

it is Torvaldi who is actually releasing the kernels,my bad.the kernels are actually meant for non-i386 pc's.read up.

I'm having this problem as well. I'm running kernel 3.7.3, but freezing has occurred with every kernel I've used including Mint 14's default version.

There was a bug with Mint 14, that caused freezing in some cases if you had an Intel CPU with integrated graphics. I *think* Mint 14.1 was released to address this issue, among others?

I thought that might have been my problem. I do get freezes when I run SuperTuxCart, though it's intermittent.
