A personal Linux milestone

Post by rmcellig »

I have a 24" iMac circa 2006.

Ever since embracing Linux, I always wanted to install Linux on my iMac. Two things held me back. One was that I was unable to record my radio shows from the radio I had attached to my iMac and the other was that I was unable to use the built in camera for Skype.

I am pleased to announce, and I'm not sure why, that I am at this moment recording from my radio while booted from my Linux Mint 14 XFCE CD. I think what may have made this possible is that I am using the Pulse Audio Volume Control app. Not sure but I am so HAPPY that I have this working. Now that I have to figure out how to be able to use the built in camera and... (like Steve Jobs would say), one more thing. I need to be able to quickly edit some of my video files so that I can extract snippets of video. On my iMac I use an app called mpeg streamclip. I need to find something on the Linux side that works as well as this nifty app.

Good stuff - as Mac hardware is apparently what Linus Torvalds uses, then I suppose it must be good enough for most other Linux users as well!

I know nothing about video editing, I have never shot a video in my life (I hardly ever take pictures never mind video), but if that is what you are looking for, have a look at this site:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/top5-linux ... -software/

especially the comments afterwards (you have to ignore the people slagging each others opinions off, but you should get some good ideas from there). As someone who knows nothing about it, OpenShot sounds like a good bet - available through the package manager as well.

Good luck.

I did a quick google search and found possible alternatives to mpeg streamclip. Hope this helps! and congrats on getting mint on your mac! :)

Edit: it seems only a few of the programs in the list are Linux compatible. Hope it helps anyways

Thanks I will check them out. Now if I can only get the iMac camera to work, that would be the icing on the cake.

I am now able to record my radio shows from the radio now. It's really a dream come true for me when it comes to getting Linux to work on my iMac. :)
