VLC 2.0.4 sound distortion (analoque and HDMI)

Postby Eko_taas on Thu Jan 24, 2013 2:01 am

I have googled a lot, but getting desperate with VLC. Had earlier "expired" LMDE, which had VLC 2.0.0 - noise problem was very rare (but happened every now and then)

Now fresh install of LMDE-Xfce (3.2.0-4-amd64, up-to-date)
Sound H/W
Code: Select all
lspci -knn
...
01:05.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS780 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 3000-3300 Series] [1002:960f]
   Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:040f]
   Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
...

/etc/pulse/daemon.conf modified to force same sample as in source (.mp4)
Code: Select all
...
; default-sample-rate = 44100
default-sample-rate = 48000
...

Both analoque stereo (then 1st line active) and HDMI sound is perfect with others players / system sounds
/etc/default/grub
...
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1"
...

But with VLC after 0 - 60s sound get destroyed - this is both with streaming and files-in-SSD.
(Audia: Codec MPEC-4 AAC, Stereo, Sample rate 48000Hz, Bitrate 159kbps (all files the same))

Checked that "libspeexdsp1" seems to be standard nowdays...

Also pavucontrol installed and all options tested with and w/o HDMI. Only trouble seems to be VLC (which I would like to keep as other S/W using it)

Backwards not so much to go
Code: Select all
apt-cache showpkg vlc
Package: vlc
Versions:
1:2.0.4-dmo2 (/var/lib/apt/lists/www.mirrorservice.org_sites_debian.linuxmint.com_debian_latest_multimedia_dists_testing_main_binary-amd64_Packages) (/var/lib/dpkg/status)
...
2.0.3-3 (/var/lib/apt/lists/www.mirrorservice.org_sites_debian.linuxmint.com_debian_latest_dists_testing_main_binary-amd64_Packages)
....

any other proposal but to make from source (http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/) (don't like this option as then VLC-update has to be blocked

Re: VLC 2.0.4 / 2.0.5 sound distortion (analoque and HDMI)

Updated todays manually from 2.0.4 for VLC 2.0.5 by downloading from sid (http://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/vlc/download ) + vlc-nox ( http://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/vlc-nox/download )

and runned in root-terminal
Code: Select all
dpkg -i *deb

All works fine, but same problem with sound remains...

Hope to find some time to downgrade to 2.0.0 or even to 1.1.3 (standard for squeeze, http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/amd64/vlc/download ) as long as it works, OK for me). I hope gdebi ( http://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/gdebi ) will help me as dependencies very complicated in VLC...
