Samsung CLP-620ND

Post by iainrs »

I have just ordered a Samsung clp-620nd colour laser printer to replace a 6 year old samsung Clp-550n.
The 550n has worked quite happily as a CUPS duplex colour printer on Ubuntu and now LMDE.
There doesn't seem to be much about the 620ND running under linux.
Has anyone any experience of this printer or can anyone point me to the location of the appropriate 'ppd' files ?

(I'm prepared for the worst - the printer is on 30 days free trial. If I can't get it working I get my money back.)

To answer my own question.
Having taken delivery of CLP-620ND (£234 from Printerland with 5 years on-site warranty) I was able to download the Unified Linux Driver from the website (http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model ... -downloads) together with Smartpanel utility. I followed the instructions and the driver installed quite happily and worked fine.
The Smartpanel and driver configurator utilities looks horrible (compared with windows versions) but work OK.
The printer does not run native postcsript but seems to emulate OK. Print quality looks good and starts lot faster than the CLP-550N which it replaces.
I share it with my wife's XP system (and my VirtualBox XP system) and I don't think it will be going back.

The model number Samsung CLP-620ND.

Method 1:
You may refer to the below links and use the troubleshooters. Check if it lists and helps resolve any issues: Open the Printer troubleshooter:

I have had the same model for about 8 months. The driver installs O.K.
But all printing is saturated. Smartpanel would take care of this but it will not work. It complains that I need to set up a valid port!
I have tried it on several distros including Mint 14. My personal choice at the moment is Mageia.

Trying to run it from a terminal returns a seg fault.

Samsung tech support just trot out their standard mantra and ignore the supplied facts.
To get any printing I have to 'print' to cups-pdf and; from Windows print resultant pdf file.
I would love to ditch it and buy an alternative but I foolishly spent £200+ buying a set of replacement cartridges.
Oh! Will I ever learn?

Re: Samsung CLP-620ND: SULD ?

this post

http://www.kirriwa.net/john/doc/samsung-printers.html

gives advice to use the Samsung Unified Linux Driver

http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/index.html

I am not clear if you have the SULD installed: it may improve the quality of your printing:

and the guy who works on all this has created a forum

http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/forum/

that you can post to: so you may wish to invest a little time on a cold wintry evening to get this all tweaked!

best wishes

Printer company's don't seem to have much intrest in Linux
They spend so much on the add's and so little development
The reality is that all these software issues could be contracted out to China or India and solved in a couple of months
Using open contracts the problems could all be solved for small change
It really show their lack of imagination and absolute indifference to the consumer .
On the other hand it might just drive a new service based industry into the market place
Let's hope

I saw advice recommending to tell Samsung if I wasn't happy using their product
I rarely print anything ( once ever two years?) would rather not go through hours of searching the web for the hidden tricks
Spending hours finding solutions simply didn't make sense for a job that only ran for 15 minutes -------so I fired up an old XP and ran them off

In fairness Samsung sent me TWO e-mail reply's within TWO days , concerned about their unhappy customer ---impressive-------my thanks
Hope in the future the Linux issue is simplified
Product was a simple ML 2165W and it ran like a dream once it got past the software issue
Thanks
