Wht can't I open root folder?

Post by lumpy5oh »

i have used wine to install a program but I need to access the program files to change a file. I was trying to search in the root folder but was told I do not have permissions to enter root. I am the administrator on the computer and should be able to access all files on my computer.
Sorry if this topic has been covered before but the search function wont allow the word root to be searched for

Thanks

UPDATE
When I try to change the properties of the root folder it tells me I am not the owner; well I am the owner.
Hope this helps

As a regular user you don't have access to root folders nor can you modify/edit root folders or write to root folders.
Only as root you have access to those folder. This is a safety measurment of Linux, if you're not the root, you don't have access.

What you call administrator is under Linux root. You get root access to folders by pressing Alt+F2 and type the command gksu nemo. Type your user password and you have root access to all files and folders.

I don't recall Wine installing files to the root folder. It installs files on a hidden directory in your home folder. Press Ctrl+H in your file manager to show hidden files and folders.

What you call administrator is not root under Linux. The root user is allowed to do everything, the administrator just has privileges to run programs and command as root when needed. Depending on your desktop environment and file manager you use (it helps to provide details when you ask questions), there are various ways to do that. In Nemo on Cinnamon, it is even easier than nomko suggest, just right-click a folder and from the context menu select "Open as Root". After you have authenticated yourself, Nemo will get the permissions from you to open the folder as root.

What do you want to do in the WINE folder?? There's nothing special to do there as user and/or root...
