Is it me or the server? Still trouble updating

Post by evariste »

Hi guys,

I, like many others it seems, have had trouble updating lately. In view of the advice given in this thread:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=122213

I have changed to a mirror server in my country, however I get precisely the same errors as before. Specifically, a dialogue box appears and informs me that

"Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

At the risk of providing too much information, it provides a list of what failed:

Watching them download live, I noticed that all of the "InRelease" packages seemed to fail.

Now, I am presently living in a university college where I access the internet via the college's proxy. A couple of guys on my floor that use Ubuntu have suggested that this may be the cause of my headache, as they don't have any trouble (they use the university's wireless, which is distinct from the college network. I don't use the wireless because I can't download the driver for my wireless card for some reason).

Any suggestions for a solution to all this would be greatly appreciated; I haven't been able to update Mint (Mint 13 Main Edition) since I installed it and it's becoming rather frustrating.

It is the server.

It is blocked to link with mirror servers.

So how might I go about resolving this? Would unchecking the boxes for "Ubuntu 12.04 'Precise Pangolin'", "Canonical Partners" and "http://packages.medibuntu.org/precise" do it, or is that even advisable?

So I tried doing what I suggested in my previous post - unchecking the boxes of what I thought were the problem servers - and Update Manager is still not giving me any love. Changing mirrors doesn't work either.

Does anyone know what on earth could be going wrong? The large(r) thread I provided a link to in my original post doesn't seem to apply to my situation, unless I'm missing something. I'm very much a newbie to Mint so this is a distinct possibility.
