Lock screen without sleeping the monitor?

Post by DrDyna »

I've been up and down google and configuration editor all day and I can't seem to get the behavior I need. I'm looking to be able to lock the screen, but I don't want it to sleep the monitor.

For some reason, when the monitor sleeps, it locks up the WM and the only way to get it back is ctrl-alt-backspace.

Edit: Actually, it would appear that just the act of locking it causes the WM to lockup hard requiring ctrl-alt-backspace.

More about user's philosophies and personal perceptions on Their Desktop. And intended uses may dictate choice.
Gnome programs tend to be more simplistic and task-oriented. KDE software is geared toward maximizing functionality, which means you will often see a whole lot of options inside KDE apps, almost to the point of clutter for many like myself.
A rule of thumb is that KDE programs are usually bundles, whereas Gnome aims for standalone precision-usage utilities and applications.
KDE has more options readily visible. It is easily configurable but can bewilder new users.
Gnome has less options readily visible. Its minimalistic offering of configurability attracts new users.
Gnome users typically accuse KDE of being bloated. Besides eating more memory, KDE desktop load times are slower because they have to load more from disk. KDE users justify this by saying that once the libraries are loaded, applications start quicker.
Again tell me why Chocolate Ice Cream is the Best and only one needed? I like Chocolate it's just my favorite is Vanilla with Cookie dough or Strawberry I prefer more than chocolate.
