I'm a long time Debian (98-2005) and Ubuntu (05-13) user just recently switched to Mint after being frustrated and disappointed with Ubuntu for far too long (since 11.x). I wished GNOME2 was still around - I hate all the tablet/touch screen oriented desktops coming out now - and didn't know about MATE. Since switching to MATE my PC is responsive and fast, as it's supposed to be, and I have all the nice features I was used to in GNOME2 that Unity and GNOME3 devs decided were bad for me (too many to list). Thank you so much for Mint and Mate!

And regarding Gnome...that's called development! Gnome 2 is basically already buried and forgotten. Gnome 3 is now the standard. But MATE is forked from Gnome 2 so i think MATE should satisfy you.
