[Solved]Kernel Panic after installing Driver for Asus USBN66

Post by JadeWingDragon »

I'm a relative newbie to Linux, having run Ubuntu 12.10 for a few months before I decided to try Mint. Currently running Mint 14 Cinnamon, but I'm having trouble getting my Asus USB N66 wireless dongle to speak with the system. I followed the directions from this thread:http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=113764 and installed the rt3573sta driver from the included CD via the method described here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1986992 (post 5). Mint shortly thereafter proceeded to go totally gaga and became nonoperational. Black screen with white text that I think is a Kernel Panic. I would reboot and it would just do it again after loading and maybe working for a few minutes. I don't know if it's the driver of something I'm doing wrong, so some help would be appreciated.

Since the "read before you post here" thread said to do so, following are the results of typing mintwifi into terminal:
-------------------------
* I. scanning WIFI PCI devices...

* II. querying ndiswrapper...

* III. querying iwconfig...

Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

For others who may have the same problem, it appears someone edited the driver and has possibly fixed my issue. https://github.com/ashaffer/rt3573sta. If you follow the directions previously linked with the modified driver, it appears to work. I've got it running on Mint 15 Cinnamon x64 and so far it's behaving. Following directions from this post http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=120246 gets the driver to load on startup, so you don't have to type modprobe every time you boot up your system.

Sorry to the mods for resurrecting this after almost a year(!), but I figured someone might run into this as well. I had to abandon Mint and run Cinnamon inside Ubuntu (which was annoying) when I couldn't find the solution, and it made me sad, so I thought I'd put my fix up. :D
