Desktop and monitor rotation changed after updating today.

Post by colinmcc »

I have a mint box pro with cinemon desktop that has been working fine until today when I let it do an update by clicking on the little icon to the bottom right of my desktop. I hadn't done that for a while so it took nearly an hour.

About half way through a message box came up asking something like 'Do you want to overwrite grub with the one contained in the package maintainers update?'

I clicked on continue, and eventually the update finished. After a reboot everything has changed, my icons are in different places and are grey, my desktop looks totally different.

And, worst of all, my left hand monitor a DP++ unit on which I had set rotate Clockwise to view long documents is no longer rotated! When I go to Applications>System Tools>System settings and select Displays, I am given the option to rotate it and when I select for example rotate>Clockwise, I am first told:

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
with a smaller message: could not set the configuration for CRTC 72.

If I click on close I get another message box saying:

Failed to apply configuration: %s
with a smaller message:
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code2: could not set the configuration for CRTC 72

I'm guessing that the update included for some reason the package maintainer's personal settings and that I now have their computer's settings pointing at their drivers which are not right for the mint box.

I desparately need to revert back to my own pre-update settings, old desktop etc, how can I do this?

Thank you!

Ok, the ATI graphics driver is somehow failing to work properly now. Please try running:

Code: Select all

sudo aticonfig --initial -f

Help!!

After running the above command, I went into the screen settings, selected rotate Clockwise, clicked apply. My Screen did not rotate, but the mouse stopped displaying a pointer, and my desktop which I was NOT trying to rotate has gone black!

Luckily my browser was open on the screen that still works, and as I move the mouse on my desktop, even though I have no cursor if it hapens to be at a button the button changes so I was able to find this text box and start typing.

I'm now at another computer since it is impossible to use the one we are discussing with out a visble mouse pointer.

I notice that the one screen that isnot black now has a menu bar top and bottom, which previously were on the screen that has gone black, so it looks as though applying rotate clockwise reset the system to just a one screen desktop but without a mouse cursor.

Ok, could you post the output of inxi -Gx again? This output could be useful too:

If I had a mouse pointer I could try to go open a console but without one I can't!

Ctrl-Alt-T worked..

You can use Ctrl-Alt-T to open a terminal. Maybe rebooting the computer helps? You can press the power button, then use Tab keys to navigate to Reboot.

You will notice that the entry for my second monitor has gone.

xrandr produces a long listing I can't hand copy it over to this machine to type in and without a mouse I can't scroll back up the terminal page to read it.

Do you still remember how you installed the graphics driver? Manually from AMD's website, from the repository, or from Additional Drivers / Software Sources?

I never installed it, the mint box pro came with it all installed and working. It WAS working 'till thismorning when the upgrade ran.

I don't dare reboot it at present since before we started this conversation I had started a backup of all my files(in home) to an external hd, which is, I think still running.

I've managed to click on the system settings tab, but I think it must be opening on the 'black' screen and I don't know how to make it open on the working one. Similarly if I manage to move the invisble mouse to the File Operations tab to see if my backup has finished that too appears to open but not on the working screen.

I seem to recall that when a file copy is finished the File operations tab will vanish so I'm guessing it is still copying files.

I notice that if I move the invisible mouse to the top left corner a mouse cursor (arrow) appears but disappears again as soon as I move it right or down.

Thank you for your help BTW ;-)

Update: The file operations tab vanished, so I rebooted by holding down the power key.

Reboot went as normal,

Now I have a mouse pointer but..

Both monitors are now working, but are duplicates of each other. when I go into Applications>System Tools>System Settings>Displays, the box marked Mirror displays is ticked.

I untick the box and it displays both monitors by their correct maker names. Both have their 'on' switch selected, both just have the rotation options: normal and 180 degrees.

If I un-tick the Mirror box and click apply, it fails with these error messages: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
and below it: requested position/size for CRTC 71 is outside the allowed limit: position=(1680, 0), size=(1680, 1050), maximum=(1920, 1920)

I click Close..

And get:

Failed to apply configuration: %s
and below it: GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code3: requested position/size for CRTC 71 is outside the allowed limit: position=(1680, 0), size=(1680, 1050), maximum=(1920, 1920)

Here is the output from the comands you asked me to run earlier:

And, finally I tried:

[sudo] password for colin:xxxxxxxxx
Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saving back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-1

After this one I tried applying the separate monitors again, both screens went black and after waiting quite a while for them to light up again I had to hit the power button and reboot.

I'm writing this in gedit now, cutting and pasting it and saving it frequently as I go, since I keep on losing what I was typing into the forum text box as the mint box crashes. I'll paste it in now and see if someone can help me please.

Thank you.

I'd try reinstalling the graphics driver - if the fglrx package is installed in Synaptic Package Manager then please mark it for re-installation - if not, it'll be a manually installed driver in which case you need to download the installer at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... linux.aspx.
