SOLVED - Update breaks Grub

Postby Stevo1390 on Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:25 pm

I recently did two installs of LMDE: one a dual boot with XP on a HP tower. Ran update immediately after, everything worked fine. Two, a clean install by itself to a Dell E6500 Latitude laptop. Install ran fine, can reboot. However, after running update several times now, laptop will not boot. Runs bios and then loops back to beginning running bios. Any ideas where to start. Maybe not updating grub? :?:

runs bios and never boots?
or bios then a blank screen
do you ever see a terminal? if you ever get a terminal, you should be able to just sudo update-grub.
if you never get a terminal;
put the live installer cd or usb back in
get a terminal from that one (live one) then follow the linked advice
http://www.webtechquery.com/index.php/2 ... m-live-cd/
http://www.noobslab.com/2011/10/install ... after.html
either link should be helpful
it involves terminal commands

Tnx for your reply, Whirly. I tried to install again and, duh, read the install notes this time. They caution you to only install grub in sda (for most people anyway). I was installing to sda & sda1. The note you get on the install screen advises this! And, I installed to both in the other machine and it works. But the other machine was a dual boot w/xp, so that may have been the difference. The laptop would just continually loop through the bios and back again. No terminal or anything else was available. Like a fortran DO loop! Anyway, problem solved - both machines are running fine now. :D

Tnx again UR quick reply.
