where to edit file associations

Post by geoffm »

I'm sure it's just a config file somewhere we need to edit, which file is it?

I see you are on the latest Cinnamon version, so I suspect you also are now using Nemo as your file manager. In your file manager you can right-click a file of the type for which you want to change the associations, and from the context menu select Properties (do not select Open With, select Properties). Then, go to the Open With tab and here you can change the default association or add associations to other programs.

Thanks but I already knew that and it isn't what I was looking for. This process is extremely slow if you want to change multiple associations, and it doesn't allow one to see what is associated to what. And it doesn't work for folders.

Edit: I found /.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
