windows xp isnt in the boot list

Postby drados on Mon Feb 04, 2013 2:16 am

ok, i finally managed to get mint working, but i broke windows 7 in the process and need to do a fresh install of it, which would be easy if i could boot windows xp, problem is that its not listed with the other options when i turn on the computer. i have tried sudo update-grub to no avail, and i also tried sudo fdisk -l which did show up the partition containing windows xp, and if i open computer up in mint i can see the partition and access it fine. just incase its important, XP is installed to C drive, whilst win7 is installed to D drive. thanks for any help

heres the terminal dump:

drados@drados-M51Va ~ $ sudo update-grub

This doesn't look like a partition table
Probably you selected the wrong device.

Hello drados and welcome to Mint,

you may want to give boot repair a try before you do anything else.

you can find it along with instructions here:

Thank you for the reply, I tried using boot-repair and to the best of my knowledge not much happened, here is the URL it gave me: http://paste2.org/p/2827430

A bit of new information,I restored the windows boot loader to see if that would work, but it just boots to windows 7 without giving me an option for 'older windows versions' like it used to. Not sure If this is important but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Windows 7 is still totally broken and needs a Fresh install though, so I reinstalled grub and now I'm back at square 1

At this point I'd do a complete reinstall - windows 7 first then Mint allow mint to place grub in the MBR you can add windows xp if you still want it later.
here's a page with some good tips on dual booting it's written for mint 13 but should work just as well for 14. http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/06/06/how-to-dual-boot-linux-mint-13-cinnamonmate-and-windows-7/
you may also want to look at this page : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DualBoot

good luck
