Unmounting during suspend, Mint 14.1

Here's an odd one... I have two disks on this laptop; one has a W8 installation of which one directory is mounted as /windows

During sleep, /windows disappears from sight and is no longer displayed either by ls or with the file manager.

sudo umount /windows
sudo mount -a

is required to restore things to visibility.

I'm a little confused as to why this should be - any suggestions?
