Best desktop ever (Cinnamon 1.6)

Post by NOB »

Hi

after using Ubuntu since 08.04 up to 10.04 I was looking for a replacement at the time
the 10.04 version runs out of support.
I am happy to find Linux Mint - some friends are using it and I tried it.

My "evaluation" of a new Linux desktop included Lubuntu, Zorin OS, Xubuntu, PC/OS, etc.
but Mint was the best in out-of-the-box features and so I chose Maya for the long-term support.

I started with the Xfce edition on my old AMD Turion laptop, found some problems with
my Canon digital camera but solved them after a while. See my
tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1172 for a how-to.
I hope to include some screenshots but have to upload those to a free image site, first.

The next step I took was to install Mint 13 on an external (USB) drive to really try it on my
HP laptop (Intel i7, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB 7200 HD, NVidia graphic).
It worked rather well and I like the backup port of cinnamon 1.6 to Maya including the added features
like the removable drive applet (no longer requried to open a filemanager window or hide all windows to find
the icon on the desktop to eject it), the "notification" applet (if a lot come up in a short time, you don't miss any).

It is the best desktop I ever used on a Linux kernel or other OSs.
And I'm in the Unix/Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris business for more than 25 years, now.

It's the first desktop I didn't disable the desktop effects and the sound immediately.
These implementations do not disturb but give small, non-annoying feedback for certain actions
like remove an USB stick, etc.

And I'm happy that even the cinnamon 1.8 version will be backported to Maya, see http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2299 comment number 3 !

Thanks go to the Mint-team for all the good work.

I hope supporting this large number of desktop environments can continue
in the future. It sure takes a lot of work and time to be up to date.
On the other hand, this number of desktops may be one of the reasons
why Linux Mint is the top one on the Distrowatch web site.

I can't wait to install the new Cinnamon screensaver http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/work-sta ... saver.html in the Xfce as well as the Cinnamon edition.

Kind regards

Norbert.
