i would start looking for the usual suspect

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep nautilus
in 2 xfce installs it reports

just that.
i bet that your list is bigger
Quite right, zero zero:

fiver,
you are in xfce, right?
if it was me i would start cleaning the house
- you don't (probably) need nautilus
sudo apt-get -s purge <each one of the listed above, one at a time>
check what else is/would be removed (you are only simulating here, if the output looks ok remove the -s switch)
afaik the only pkg that you won't be able to remove is libnautilus-extension1a, all the rest should be safe.

this is the first part (the easy one  )

second part:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep gnome
now the list should be huge and you can't remove all of it (actually there's things there that if you remove you'll break your install: like keyring and networkmanager)
so here you have to look for the obvious:
- gnome-shell
- gnome-terminal
- gnome-system-monitor
(there's a few more that i don't remember now :P ) but again always careful with those removals (watch what goes with it)

in the end (and after some trials) you will have a cleaner system.

EDIT:
got now those updates

Code: Select all

The following packages will be upgraded:
  chromium chromium-browser chromium-inspector exim4-config grub-common grub-pc grub-pc-bin
  grub2-common libpython2.7 python2.7 python2.7-dev python2.7-minimal tar
13 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
i'm in kde (and it's free of gnome intrusions  )

Yer a peach, zerozero :)
I AM in Xfce.
I'll pull the obvious stuff out and err on the side of caution. Stuff that MAY have pulled in nautilus and gnome stuff: TrueCrypt -it launches nautilus by default, it seems. The other is dropbox -even though I've followed some tutorials to get it working with xfce/thunar I think the initial install might have pulled in nautilus (or wanted to).
About to try your suggestions and I'll report back if anything comes up -not hugely afraid of breaking things as I have a recent clonezilla backup.
Thanks again!

I feel a bit like I'm spamming up the place with these long code blocks -is there a show/hide or spoiler bbcode tag enabled? Anyway, here goes:

Code: Select all

Cautious of pulling out the above, I know not to remove keyring and networkmanager. Thoughts on if it'd be worth it to play around with removing stuff with gnome in the name or...?
As always -thank you!

fiver, sorry for the delay, i wanted to boot into this install and get this info from this VM

this is a lmde-xfce install (VM) where i did what you are trying now
removal history http://pastebin.com/1kNrbRNa
gnome libs installed right now http://pastebin.com/7KgHYggA (there's still a lot in there)

as this VM is not in my main system i've been a bad maintainer and probably the last DU was couple months ago   (always a BIG error if you're tracking testing) but right now the DU output (295 upgraded, 9 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.) tho daunting is relatively gnome free (and surely there's no gnome-shell or nautilus creeping in) http://pastebin.com/nRj7C3Wz
so all in all the main objective is accomplish but i know that there's a better cleaning up to do in that gnome list

Thanks zerozero (as always),
I've been cautiously pulling things out and haven't run into any major issues. I somehow pulled out gdm3 which became obvious at reboot :D , I installed mdm and that was that. O ther than that I accidentally removed gedit (gnome, but I like it). All easy to recover from.
I'm happy getting nautilus out -and gnome-shell. I'm not desperate for a totally pristine xfce on this install (we'll see how the unofficial lmde xfce goes).
All is well and thanks again o/

anyway, tired of waiting for a fix, and with the system unusable like this i followed viking's advise and downgraded to the backport xorg for the moment; it's a bit of a scary move at first (the amount of removals is impressive) but the system is finally responsive as it was and should be

and today i found out that nvidia launched a new v. with support to xorg 1.11
it should be in experimental soon
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... &px=OTk2MQ
this is a post from oct 2011 and yesterday saved this install :D
few days ago i upgraded all my hardware (new MB, new ram, new cpu, new power supply) and kept the same hdd with my installs;
i knew that removing the nvidia card and installing the HD4000 intel would bring issues but i managed to solve them *easily* in the other installs except this;
the same procedure would either give me a depressing tty or worst just a blinking cursor;
after 3 days of some hair-pulling  yesterday (between a coffee&cigarette) i remembered this breakage and "waitasecond!! is xorg-video-intel installed? nahh  "

fixed 8)

this means (for us tracking directly testing) that we will see again the awakening of Testing (this time with codename Jessie) in the day(s) immediately after.

this topic (more than 2 years long) fulfilled its purpose and will be locked then. it's better (with Jessie's cycle) to start afresh; the new topic is here >>
