Software Manager Hangs

I just installed Linux Mint 14. Everything is great except the software manager hangs. I was trying to install the gedit latex plugins and the software manager just freezes. I ran mintinstall from the command line and got the following. Now sure how to proceed. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello bangbangbang and welcome to Mint,

please go to a terminal and type the following commands one at a time and then try software manager again.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update
let us know if that works or not.
or if you get any error messages post them here.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply!

I ran the two commands, and they did not produce errors.
However, the software manager still hangs. It is the same
output again:

Now that I try to install more things, it seems like it is really just the
gedit latex plugin that makes it hang forever when trying to install.
Now sure why it does not like that particular package.

I can install other things just fine. However, the SM still hangs when it
tries to search while typing. I tried to turn this off but that setting does
not persist between closing and running the SM again.

well I'm not sure why it's hanging on that particular file. but have you tried installing it via Administration >Synaptic ?
I'm using mate DE here and it installs fine.
Good Luck

Well, it also will not install through the Package Manager.

I would still like to fix the fact that the SM hangs when searching while typing.

Since it does now hang when searching while typing is off, how can i make that
setting persist between uses of the SM?

John
go to Software manager and then edit tab and uncheck the search in package summery , think that may help.

I am having the same issue.
I don't normally use SM (I think this is the first time)

I get :-

Now apt update -f shows no broken packes, and synaptic works fine.
I have disabled the suggestion in preferences but it still hangs.

EDIT:
It looks like it is the game I was trying to install (freeciv) it failes in synaptic with itself!
Trying to install freeciv-client (any) gives a conflict with itself.
