System Locks Up For 30 Seconds or Longer

Post by jackmason »

Occasionally, Mint 14 locks up for 30 seconds or more before the keyboard is again live. The last instance was creating a new topic in this forum under networking. I had just typed in the subject and hit the tab key to enter the body of the topic. The cursor moved to the body window and the keyword was no longer active.

The mouse could move, open a terminal window (but I could not type in it), close the window, activate the menu, etc. But, it was over 30 seconds before the keyboard was again live. Surely others have seen this. What is the issue and how can I fix this. We are going to be using Mint as a server and cannot afford for it to take time off to "think" about things.

Thanks

Then your search for a solution would already have turned it up, and you wouldn't be here I think. No, this sounds like some problem with your hardware or its drivers. That can happen, especially laptops can be problematic with lack of support for Linux from their manufacturers. You didn't mention which Linux Mint edition you were using, but for example Cinnamon can be picky about your graphics card and its driver. Most should work fine, but for some graphics card you'll need to enable either the proprietary drivers (from Software Sources > Additional Drivers).

If you want more suggestions on this, please include the output of the following command to tell us some basics of your system. If this is a laptop or a brand name desktop, please include the make and model of your computer.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Also recommend that after the next lock up, you immediately open the file /var/log/syslog and at the end of the file look back for any errors or warnings around the time of the freeze. Through an error shown there, that was how I solved my lock ups (which turned out to be my motherboard's manufacturer fault for not properly supporting rc6 power-savings mode).
