I am currently trying to install my graphics card drivers, and I am still stuck on the part about stopping the mdm. When I tried to use both sets of code provided to shut it down, nothing worked, I still got the black screen with blinking cursor. Here are my specs if you need them, http://compreviews.about.com/od/maindes ... -UR20P.htm
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, however since my mdm is giving me problems, I figured it was software related.

Re: Cannot stop MDM
MDM is the display manager. I don't think you can stop it without winding up with a black screen.
Maybe you can just reboot for your changes to take effect.

Re: Cannot stop MDM (Fixed)
Yes, I understand that now. My main objective was to download/enable the drivers for my Nvidia graphics card, I later learned that trying to turn of the mdm was a trick used to fool neophytes (which I am). Anyways, I found the one command I needed, and all is well. Thank you very much ^_^
