Mint 14 KDE a little bit slow

Post by ground21 »

Hi,

I recently installed Mint 14 KDE. I find it a little bit slow in comparison to Kubuntu 12. I don't know why, but I have a feeling that simple operations like window (Amarok to be precise but also others) resizing is't smooth as I would like it to be.
I found here some posts saying KDE is running well on Thinkpad X60... I also think that my current laptop (Thinkpad T61, 2.1 Ghz, 3GB RAM, Quadro NVS140M) should be able to handle KDE 4.10 without any problems.

I tried already to disable desktop effects but maybe I forgot about something. Could you give me some tips which settings should be disabled/optimised in order to get better performance. I don't think that the only solution here is to switch to LXDE... I hope ;)

Check Settings>Desktop Search>Nipomuk isn't enabled as slows system down indexing files on system 1st fresh install.
If not enabled then something else. Like not optimal graphics driver may be the issue.

If everything is set up correctly on your system and with animations enabled, you could try changing the animation speed. There are 7 settings from instant down to extremely slow. Those setting are at: system settings, desktop effects, general tab, last input box on that tab. Changing this speed makes a very big difference on my rig.

Hey Guys, I am new to Unix/LinuxMint. I installed KDE Linux Mint 14 in my Windows 7 laptop. Everything was fast for three weeks. When I installed tomcat last week and started my application, it takes 20-30 minutes for it to load the home page. I saw the posting that Linux Mint 14 has performance issues http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2234, and it got fixed in 14.1

When I run the following command, it says the version is 14 (and not 14.1). How do I download the new version? How to find the performance issue? I ran the top command and didn't see any process taking too much memory or CPU. Your help is highly appreciated. I have attached my settings

mlakshma@mlakshma-VirtualBox ~ $ cat /etc/linuxmint/info
RELEASE=14
CODENAME=nadia
EDITION="KDE 64-bit"
DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 14 Nadia"
DESKTOP=KDE

RELEASE_NOTES_URL=http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_nadia_kde.php
USER_GUIDE_URL=http://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php
GRUB_TITLE=Linux Mint 14 KDE 64-bit

I have the tomcat running and I checked the free memory

Maddy,

If I am not mistaken, are you loading linux mint via VirtualBox? If so, this could be the reason you are having the issues you do?

Here are a few questions for you.

1. Do you have linux installed on your local HD?
2) What are the specs of your system?
3) If installed on your hd, is it dual booted on one HD or installed on a separate drive?
4) What are your Virtualbox settings? (i.e memory, storage space, video, etc)

Linux mint should not have any issues when it comes to speed, however it does depend on the speed of your processor, hard drive and how you have it setup in vbox. I have mine installed on a quad AMD 3.5 processor, with 16gigs of memory and a I gig video card. Even when running in VBox, I have those settings as high as I can. 8 gig of mem and I make sure to chose all four processors. I also have a terabyte of Hard drive space.

If you have the ability to install directly on your hard drive I would suggest that, even if it means you have to purchase another drive to put it on, so you don't have to erase the current setup you have.
