Updating Stuff

Post by Pierre »

One of the things about 'upgrading' or 'updating' - is that some things get broken. :(

the most stable Mint & one that I really liked was Mint 7 - Gloria,
the next most stable was Mint 10 - Julia :)

I am thinking a similar way about Mint 13 - Maya 8)

However - I use Gnome Commander - a two pane - file manager utility - a lot,
I can install that - it is in the repository, still.
another is Giver - that was broken way back in Mint 11:-
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... er#p593957
but it can be fixed:-

The thing about 'nix - is that you get used to stuff just working - aka the OOB experience.
- unlike the "TAX" - which works - sometimes really well

I promote Mint - to each person - differently:-
- to a newbie as easy
- to a regular as stable
- to a experience as reliable.

the killer - is when things "break"

Anyway:- that's my 2c

Re: Giver

Just an FYI but an alternative to Giver is TransferOnLan: http://code.google.com/p/transfer-on-lan/

From the web page:
Transfer on LAN is a spiritual son of Giver.
Java based - no need to install just unpack ( it's a jar file ) - will run on Windows, Linux, OSX, and a toaster oven as long as it has Java installed on it.

EDIT: The developer is even smart enough to provide a TransferOnLan.sh file that the user can launch ( double click ) to override Ubuntu's insistence that jar files have to be executable to run.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.
