Wow, it is so cool screenshots! What theme do you use? What configs? Thanks for your review. I've been waiting for this so long, and now I found it from you Now I wanna install KDE 4.10 more and moreOrbmiser wrote:After a few hours testing seems to run great.
And a strange remember size & position with Gimp 2.8 but seem to figure it out and got it displaying properly.
Maybe due to theme change?
Mint KDE 4.1.0 upgrade Feb. 7 Desktop by Orbmiser, on Flickr
On KDE 4.9.4 could ramp it up to 1-2gb in use multiple programs. After closing everything the desktop would only return to idle at 1.1gb or so. As fresh startup to desktop usually started out at 470-480mb for 4.9.4.
Notice on 4.10 drops down to under 1gb so seems more ram is being released. And KDE seems consistently 200-300mb lighter than Cinnamon 14 under same conditions & same apps being used. Also includes fresh startup with Cinnamon weighing in around 700-800mb to desktop. And KDE same user startup apps weighs in around 460mb-500mb.
Not scientific just day to day observation.

Thank you. But, hey! How do you create your image in signature? It is cool for me! Can i get the tutorial? I am insterested in. I am Inkscape user.
Re: New KDE SC 4.10
I didn't there is a thread here somewhere where a forum member artist creates them and post them.
Called signature or user bars? I think.
Can snatch mine just right-click on it and save as. Then upload to pic hosting site and can imbed code in signature.
Or use mine.
Just copy the code above and insert into your signature block in forum user control panel .
But have to donate a few bucks to Mint to be called a supporter.http://linuxmint.com/donors.php
Otherwise there are other Mint & KDE signature bars in one of the threads here.

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
Help!
I also tried to upgrade my Mint13KDE to 4.10, first I did:
which updated my kernel from 3.2.0-23 (not sure about the last number) to 3.2.0-27 (not sure either, but I remembered it was a minor change).
Rebooted, everything OK. Then I performed this:
then:
but this resulted in some error in line 3, so I opened the list file and deleted the whole line. Then it processed fine, after 20 minutes the output was clear no errors, as far as I could see, but when I tried this:
it immediatelly said no packages to install, remove or anything...
and this:
the same answer.
So I rebooted, grub menu was correct, then it started with boot messages and after a few secconds I'm getting a console root (Welcome to Linux Mint Maya KDE), OK my usuall username, then password... ok, but no graphical session afterwards, just a blinking console.
What should I do next/type in the console?
EDIT: startx was the command (thanks to Se7en from the #linuxmint-chat )
Now it's fine... The 1st thing I did was to enable automatic user login and passwordless login, but the startx doesn't start automatically
I also tried to upgrade my Mint13KDE to 4.10, first I did:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Rebooted, everything OK. Then I performed this:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install
and this:

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
Is it "safe" to use in Mint 14 KDE?
I'm asking because I upgraded KDE in a previous version of Mint (to 4.8, if I'm not mistaken) and although most things were fine I lost some functionality, like the "edit menu" option when right clicking on the panel's menu.
I don't want that to happen again.

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
When I installed Linux Mint 14 KDE 64 bit in late December I was so happy with it I vowed I wasn't going to gamble with the great stability of the distro and upgrade to KDE 4.10 until it came out in the next release. However when I read on the forum that a number of KDE users had installed the new version with no problems I started having second thoughts. Yesaterday, using ZeroZero's instructions, I took the leap and installed KDE 4.10. While I was initially apprehensive I am now so glad I did, as it runs smooth as silk with no problems whatsoever. Granted I haven't run it very long, and my tests are in their infancy, but my computer has never run better. This desktop is awesome! Version 4.10 simply makes an already polished desktop sparkle even brighter!

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
It was about the invalid apt sources in line 3. Some term like "ain" or similar. Sorry I can't remember. Tell me how to search this through log and I will report exactly about it.zerozero wrote:jazz.h wrote: "some error" what error?
"in line 3" what line 3?
Anyway, it seems everything is working fine, exept I can't start startx automatically...
EDIT: I found it in my Firefox search history:
Code: Select all
E:Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kubuntu-ppa-backports-precise.list
This line should be incomplete and start with the unknown type the update process is complaining about (here ain). Just delete the whole line, save the file, and close the editor*.

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
Strange... After yesterday's digging into the problem, I performed a Mint Update and it found a bunch of libs... about 15mb, they all had 4.10 in their names... and today KDE booted automatically in graphical mode (!?!). I hope this will be permanent behaviour
Anyway, here are the outputs to zerozero's suggestions:

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
I just remembered 2 more issues regarding the graphics card...
1. My graphics card is ATI HD3200 and I wasn't using proprietary drivers. Before upgrading KDE, after dist upgrade and new kernel to 3.2.0-37 on my MintKDE 64bit, upon reboot I noticed distorted screen picture on my 22" monitor 1680x1050, display was saying it was the right resolution and refresh rate (59.9hz) but the whole picture was shifted to right, I tried changing the resolution to 1280x1024 then back to 1680x1050 but it was the same. It was distorted until I performed auto adjust on my monitor. I assume it's now the horizontal refresh a little different than before.
I don't know if this has to do anything with startx.
2. When upgraded to KDE and while inspecting the problem I came back to Display properties in System settings and I changed Primary output to be VGA-0 because it was set to None (this card also has hdmi output). Perhaps this fixed startx before the mint updates...?

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
I found the resolution in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859820&page=2. I noticecd that after manual load of X'es and KDE 4.10 my fonts were actually not rendered at all and the first initial load was always freezing at "Checking battery state ... " So I did:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-settings-experimental-310
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
reboot
And... still the same issue
However now my fonts were nice and silky.
The only option that actually does the trick for mew is to get rid of xorg.conf file from /etc/X11 completely. Once xorg.conf was removed (renamed) X'es and KDE 4.10 starts loading properly. Though I'm not sure how it is affecting other things in system and KDE itself.
Any help end advise would be greatly appreciated
Thanks again.

Re: New KDE SC 4.10
jazz.h and Siarra
i would advise both to open topics to debug the issues that you are experimenting specially because none of those issues is directly related with the kde upgrade:
- jazz.h doesn't even has kubuntu/backports in the sources.list and one could (eventually) assume that the upgrade to 4.10 was only partial
- Siarra has (as far as i can tell) graphic card issues consequence of the first dist-upgrade and the kernel upgrade and not the kde upgrade (that was one of the reasons i advised to do the upgrade in 2 steps in my post above)
