LMDE howto get KDE SC 4.9.5

Code: Select all

$ kde4-config --version
Qt: 4.8.2
KDE Development Platform: 4.9.5
kde4-config: 1.0
yeahh  4.9.5 in debian now 8)

and it's not *that* hard

prerequisites
- system updated at least to testing (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 1&t=123323 may be useful);
- good and recent backup (all went very good here, otherwise i wouldn't be writing this post but this procedure might react differently in your systems)

before we start
- we need to grab
http://packages.debian.org/sid/libhupnp1
http://packages.debian.org/sid/libqtsol ... soap-2.7-1
http://packages.debian.org/sid/librdf0
(this is what was missing on my system - sure this was a fairly vanilla install - if you find other problems post them)

getting kde 4.9.5
(kde 4.9.5 is not at debian proper at the moment; is at http://qt-kde.debian.net/)
(for simplicity here and to be inline with the instructions at qt-kde.debian i'm going to use aptitude)

Code: Select all

 # aptitude keep-all
- let's add the repo

Code: Select all

deb http://qt-kde.debian.net/debian experimental-snapshots main
deb-src http://qt-kde.debian.net/debian experimental-snapshots main

Code: Select all

# aptitude update

Code: Select all

# aptitude install pkg-kde-archive-keyring

Code: Select all

# aptitude update

Code: Select all

# aptitude -t experimental-snapshots dist-upgrade
this is the big moment 8)
my output just for reference

Nice Tut ZeroZero!
"after reboot (3 min uptime the ram usage is 241MB) awesome :P"
Still don't get the KDE Haters always saying KDE is Bloated!
Show Me the Bloat!

My 4.10 comes in way under Cinnamon at 462mb.
Where Cinnamon always comes in around 700mb at desktop startup.

Cinnamon 32bit (LMDE) on the netbook after desktop startup between 127 and 142MB of the 997MB that are left of the 1GB RAM. The 64bit version is between 270 and 310MB of 3GB RAM available on my laptop after desktop startup if i remember correct. I will look into it tomorrow and let you know the exact numbers from both machines.

I find it kinda strange that Cinnamon comes in about 700MB on your machine but then again i don't know the specs of it. :D

KDE4 has been a favorite DE of mine a while back and always liked it next to Xfce, Gnome and Cinnamon.

Nice tutorial by the way from what i've seen, must look into it some more later on. :)

Thanks zz! I was hoping to find something like this. Now all I have to do is get enough time in one day to do all the prerequisite tasks.

in a different system (highly customised this time) all(most) everything went well
rebooting from the update and kwin was crashing all the time  (like twice a second)
turns out that was bespin's fault (my self-compiled bespin style was not compatible with 4.10)
grabbing the newest version from experimental solved the issue immediately

Code: Select all
