planning to come to lmde

Post by prudra »

I have used sarge, etch, lenny and squeeze(present OS), SLED10, opensuse10.2, opensuse10.3, opensuse11.2, opensuse11.3 and opensuse12.1. I am planning to try lmde-mate. In fact the iso file is
being downloaded now even when I'm posting this mail. I'd appreciate being warned of any pitfalls that
I may face while installing. One thing that comes to my mind is that I found no url for for the repositories and would like to be brought up to date.
With friendly greetings, I remain, yours truly,
Prasanta Rudra.

Hi!

Welcome to the forums....

Just a tip, but I would wait a week or two, as brand new .isos' are being tested and should be available for download soon.
With the iso your downloading you will be faced with a huge number of updates, that may or may-not cause you problems. The updates size would be almost as large as the whole .iso.

To track the testing of new iso's.

Thank you, Gene C.

However,
1) I'm a retired Senior Citizen and have enough time on hand.
2) My Broadband connection, though slightly slower, is an infinite download plan.
3) The present download of linuxmint-201204-mate-xfce-dvd.iso will be over in about 2 hours.

So I think I'll go ahead.

What about the repos deb http:// $\cdots$ ?

Here is the first roadblock, actually a semi-roadblock.
I have 2 machines: a dell-vostro-something laptop and a Indian OEM zenith-always on netbook, both 32-bit.
Since the vostro machine is dual boot with windows 7, I thought it advisable to retain debian-squeeze.
For the netbook I panned to install linuxmint-debian with a installation-usb. I created the media with the command:
root@mahasagar:/home/rudra/linuxmint# dd if=linuxmint-201204-mate-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
I have in the past created all my media in this way and all of them worked fine on both the machines.
Now I find that this usb could run the live session on the vostro laptop, but the zenith machine hung and continued to blink ad infinitum.

I shall appreciate all help. If the netbook could not be coerced to accept the installation-media, is it advisable to install linuxmint-debian on the windows dual boot laptop? I don't want to mess up with
my windows.

Thanks.
Prasanta Rudra.
