I have a Toshiba Tecra M9 and I am trying to use an pcmcia adapter for SD cards.
I cannot get the laptop to recognize the pcmcia adapter card. I am using Linux Mint 13.

I ran lspcmcia and here's what showed up:
socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:06:06.0)

Can anyone tell me what this means?

This card inserted into a Dell c400 with puppy is recognized.
Why would it work in one linux system and in another?

Is there a list of pcmcia cards that have been found to work in Linux Mint?
OR, is the pcmcia slot being recognized in the Tecra M9?

I booted up with Puppy Slacko and used it live.

When I ran lspcmcia, I received the following:
Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:06.0)
Socket 0 Device 0: [--no driver--] (bus ID: 0000:06.0)

I checked the BIOS and did not find anything I could change relating to PCMCIA(PCIC) and cardbus operations. (Toshiba Tecra M9)

So, here is a request. Where can I find a pcmcia SD card adapter that Linux Mint 13 will recognize?
Is there an approved list somewhere? I will buy whatever works.

Socket 0 Bridge is the slot in your computer, the actual card is Socket 0 Device 0, with no driver loaded. Could you run "pccardctl ident" to identify the card? lspcmcia only shows the driver, if any, not the card's model.

Also, which kernel version does that Puppy live system use?

Edit. Could you post the output of lspci too?

Ok, so it seems to be a problem with the Toshiba laptop? Could you run lspci on that laptop with the card inserted and post the output?

That's nothing special. It should work. Actually, I have a HP laptop with the same CardBus bridge here. I have tried a 32-bit PCMCIA card in it some time ago (a 3Com OfficeConnect ethernet+modem card), and that card is detected without any problem. Your card appears to be a 16-bit PCMCIA device, however, and those are quite different. 16-bit PCMCIA cards are rare nowadays, but still I'd expect it to work. Could you boot the computer without the card in the slot, and run:

(which produces no output)

Then please insert the card, wait a moment, and run:

I took out the card and restarted the laptop.

I entered sudo dmesg -c and got 8 pages of text, do you want that?

Then I entered d-mesg and the following appeared:

sudo dmesg -C clears the log of the boot messages, so that we'll only have the messages that appear after the insertion of a card.
If you write a lowercase c then it indeed prints the whole log of your system's boot before clearing it, with an uppercase -C it clears the log without outputting the old contents first. But that does not really matter.

It doesn't appear to do anything after the insertion of the card. Does the PC Card slot of the laptop work in Windows? If not, I think it's a hardware failure or something like that.

Thanks. I have learned much while talking to you. I am writing it down in my little linux book.

I bought the unit used last year and it is possible it was broken when I received it.

I think I will just forget it is there, because it is not worth messing with Windows again.

I mainly use my computer for family history research and the web. With gramps and Linux Mint my needs are met.

Looks like a foreign lanuage where you can only understand a work here and there. Maybe it is because it is a 16bit card and not a 32 bit?

That's indeed the case, but a card is recognized so your computer is certainly capable of using 16-bit PCMCIA cards.

If you wait a while and run dmesg again, does anything new appear?

Maybe you can do this to load the pata_pcmcia driver that Puppy used:
