time not updating on panel

hello I hope this is the right place to ask questions

I am running Ununtu 12.04.2 64bit. Cinnamon was installed via the repo

add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable

I have the panel configured with the default setting to show the time and date, the problem is the time never updates and only shows the login time.

The date format I am using at the moment is:

%a %e, %H:%M

though any date format causes a problem.

Would anyone have idea how to get the time updating.
