Startx automatically (KDE 4.10 & Mint13KDE 64 & ATI), how?

Post by jazz.h »

Hi!
Recently I have upgraded kernel on my Mint13KDE 64 bit, then KDE to 4.10, by adding kubuntu backports. No errors along the way.
Now sometimes (most of the times) it boots to login console window, if user and pass were correct I can enter startx and go into KDE.
But once it did login and automatically entered KDE, which is a desired behaviour :D
In System settings > Login screen it's allowed for my user to auto login, passwordlwess, too.

How should I permanently configure startx to autostart? I'm using open source drivers on my ATI hd3200, if of any concern...

After 3 days of use, this is the statistics: 3 times it booted normally into graphic mode, 6 times it booted into console mode.
Somes rules from the experience - when booted normally these 3 times, all of them were cold boots; whenever I performed a reboot - it always booted into concsole mode.
Any ideas...?

What is your login manager, Light DM by any chance?

I don't remember I installed any additional login manager so far, so I assume it's stock (KDM?).
Although I did add login themes earlier (Get New Themes for login screen)...

I suspected lightdm to be the culprit as I faced an issue in my laptop where it went to checking battery state while booting. I guess Light DM is automatically installed with latest KDE but dont think it is set as default. Am not sure but perhaps you could try re-configuring kdm to see if it solves the issue.

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

The same thing is happening to me since I upgraded to KDE 4.10 (I also have Mint 13). Out of 5 boots, maybe once it loads KDM; otherwise I have to login via the console and either run startx or sudo service kdm restart.

I've tried to reconfigure AND reinstall kdm, but nothing helps. If anyone has any ideas what to do, please let me know. I've seen similar topics, but they were mostly related to problems with nVidia graphics drivers, while I have ATI (just like the OP).

This is from my kdm.log:

Code: Select all

Oh! I have Linux Mint 13KDE 32 & Nvidia - upgraded to 4.10 and is working fine, thankfully. I have been using KDE 4.10 since their beta and must say it is worth the upgrade. Good luck for you guys to get it fixed.

Hi guys!
Nothing helped...
I performed "sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm", I upgraded to KDE 4.10.1, I even installed ATI 12.6 Catalyst driver for my HD3200 and startx still doesn't start automatically, everything else runs fine.
