UNINSTALL LM10 REINSTALL DIFFERENTLY

Post by bernieflint »

Hi guys , have linux mint installed, but also want to install ubuntu 12 , having problems with ubuntu hanging at install stage. Apparently this ubuntu distro requires a clean install ( clean HDD ) to prevent the hanging. How do I uninstall the LM 10 to get a clean HDD to install the ubuntu to, before installing the LM 10 back on the drive. Cheers

Boot from a live dvd (mint or ubuntu, doesn't matter). Fire up the gparted tool and delete all partitions on the disk. Then install 'buntu followed by mint.

Do yourself a favour and don't reinstall Mint10 which is obsolete. Install Mint13 (long term support version) or Mint14.

Hi VIKING777, thanks for the post, but ; NOPE! does not work. I put in a Ubuntu 12.10 DVD , as a live install, went to GParted app, got the computer specs partitions on screen, but the three items showing, sda 1, sda 2, and linux swap , all had the key symbol attached at the side , indicating that they were locked. I tried the delete function after a lot of delete attempts the linux swap disappeared, but could not delete the other two. I am a novice with this app , but even the tutorial I was using said the key symbols indicated I could not delete the partitions?

The LM 10 has been great for simple basic word processing. and PDF manipulation, and using VLC for the movies. I bought the Ubuntu 12.10 and have never been able to install it, I was going to buy the LM 14 DVD with it, but was put off by the many bad reviews it had saying it was very buggy. Thanks for your assistance uninstalling the LM10, Cheers

Assuming you are looking at the correct disk in gparted (the drop down box top right) the only other explanation is that these partitions are mounted (though they shouldn't be). If that is the case all you have to do is right click the partition and select 'Unmount'.

Hi Viking 777, rechecked, and is the right disk, is good. Now. the partition has mysteriously lost its key symbol, the other two partitions have the key symbol, but would not offer the unmount option. Went to the delete icon deleted the main partition. It then showed unallocated in the box. Closed the app , went to the main page of Ubuntu hit the install button. Same thing happened, prog hangs at preparing to install page. Removed Ubuntu disk rebooted computer to check. What do you know, Linux Mint is still on the computer booted up no problem. Either I am doing something wrong or this Ubuntu 12.10 is not fit for purpose, I got both DVDs from the same seller a bone fide seller OSDisc from Linux Mint homepage. I think I will give this Ubuntu software a miss too many problems just getting it to work properly. Thank you for your help but no amount of advice will work if there’s a problem with the software . Cheers
