Startup errors after installing drivers (problem purged)

Postby Hunter2451 on Tue Feb 19, 2013 3:45 am

Hello. I installed my nvidia drivers through the synaptic software manager to solve an issue with my icons disappearing in the start menu, which solved the problem.

However, after installing these drivers, I get an error while booting into mint. The error displays on a black terminal screen, with white text, followed by a blinking underline. I didn't catch the whole thing, but it says "udevd inotify addwatch invalid argument" or something. This also happened on Ubuntu. The OS boots normally afterwards with no *known* problems, but I would love to know whats causing this/how to fix it. Thank you in advance.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you're not using dmraid, do this:
Code: Select all
sudo aptitude purge dmraid

Before I do that, I would like to know if it will affect the raid I have on my other hard drives.. Linux mint is not on a raid, but Windows 7 is. Forgive my stupidity :p

Nevermind. After installing my nvidia drivers, everything screwed up (and in my experience with linux, that happens with everything I do.). After installing the drivers, I rebooted to find a nice error message about how it can't use the configured resolutions on my monitor. It was forced as 640x480 resolution. After seeing this, I thought "Well, it's broken. Time to reinstall." So that's what I did. Halfway through the installation process, I realized, I have had to reinstall my linux distro more than 15 times. So I finally gave up and booted into windows. BUT, when I booted into windows, I was greeted with a startup repair message. I have no idea how, but linux screwed up my windows installation, forcing me to use a restore point.

Another thing I don't like about linux, is that something as simple as installing nvidia drivers requires me to open the terminal and type a bunch of commands just to get it to install properly.

Conclusion: Linux is computer hell in my opinion, and I am done with it. It's a very nice OS, and I wish I could get it working correctly, but that just doesn't seem to be happening.
