[SOLVED] Menu's hidden behind inverted transparent panel

Post by eljaywasi »

I have a set of menu's/panels, one tab on the left, one on the right, hidden behind my top-mounted transparent panel which interfere with the look of my icons and text though luckily not with selection and use. How can I disable the covered l&r tab panels? I looked through Cinnamon Settings and System Settings but didn't see the setting that controls this. I tried several other themes, but all with transparent panels have this problem. Is there a config file somewhere I have to edit? See the photos below to understand what the hell I'm complaining about ;-)

I'm on Mint 14 with Cinnamon 1.6, I'm an intermediate linux user and a Mint newbie (started with Ubuntu part time years ago, went full time months ago, got sick of Unity and curious about other distros, experimented with Arch until the driver issues with my laptop's legacy ATI card drove me nuts and finally came to Mint. Really enjoying the distro, nice work guys!)

That looks like an AWN dock running behind a Cinnamon panel. It's certainly not a Cinnamon issue.

Totally right! When I installed Mint I moved my panel immediately to the top, then I installed Cairo and never saw that it added a top dock underneath my non-transparent panel. I moved that panel to the right in the Cairo settings and was then able to right-click and delete it. But! When I do so the icons on the right of my panel become huge and the text disappeared from the items on my panel, including the time, the word 'Menu', and the titles of my open applications. An additional, but admittedly likely unrelated, problem I have is when I plug in another monitor and open an application. When I'm in the office and have my large monitor plugged in I have my laptop stacked below it and centered. When I open any application (such as eclipse as shown in the photo) the window opens in the large monitor but is sized only to the edge of the laptop monitor below. Also, when I move windows around it tends to want to stick to the borders of the laptop monitor size below, ie the magnet window function thinks that's where the borders are. See below

One more point about the dual monitor issues: When I use an application with a pop-up window in the large monitor, the pop up appears in the small monitor and is often cut off or unreadable. Taking eclipse as an example, when I bring up a javadoc the javadoc window shows up anchored to the top of the small laptop screen below. If I have an error or warning I mouse over the icon on the left but the message is written to the top of the large monitor and I can't see it (I just see a 1 pixel orange line from the bottom of the message window). I then have to drag eclipse down to the laptop window to view the message. I tried to take a screenshot of this but the pop-ups and cursor location don't show up in the screenshot.

Hi,

I don't know anything about your monitor problems .... but for the problem of the large icons on the panel:
Try going to Menu > Preferences > Cinnamon Settings > Panel
Check the two boxes -
"Use customized panel size (otherwise it's defined by the theme)" and
"Allow Cinnamon to scale panel text and icons according to the panel heights"

That fixed the text and icon problems, thanks!
Perhaps I will have to post elsewhere about the monitor issues, not sure if it's a Cinnamon problem or something else so I'm not sure where to post
