Installing Mint to older computer ?

Post by wpshooter »

I have a friend who wants Linux Mint 14 installed on their older computer which has NO DVD drive (has CD drive but no DVD drive) and does NOT have the ability to boot to a USB thumb drive (i checked).

Is there any way to get Linux Mint 14 installed on their computer ?

Thanks.

If it's that old, probably not. The problem isn't how to get the data on the computer, but a computer so old probably doesn't have a processor that supports PAE, which 14's kernel requires.

EDIT: it may be possible to get 13 on it, if you can find a way to install it. Any way other than USB to connect an external drive, maybe? Or a modified Mint ISO that will fit on a CD.

You could burn the Plop Boot Manager to CD and use Plop to boot from USB. This way you can use any current Mint Edition.

You could also use Mint 12 LXDE CD and upgrade to the Mint 13 base with apt-get.
