Is it possible that Mint Linux 14 could 'kill' my hard drive

Post by robert.thompson »

Hello:
I had an "Intel SSD 320 Series 160GB' hard disk in my Lenovo T520 laptop and on a re-boot my PC didn't - the hard disk had apparently crashed. I tried to re-install Mint but the installer said that there was no hard disk. Gparted could not locate the disk either.
I swapped the disk with one from another laptop, also containing Linux Mint 14, and it booted.
I took the broken disk to a computer store where the tech attached it to a Windows 7 PC and said that Windows could 'see it' OK. He said that was strange because it is usually linux that can see drives that Windows can't.
Anyway, even if Windows could 'see it', Mint could not. I bought a new SSD, which I installed.

Just now, on a hard re-boot, all the icons on my desktop disappeared and the network manager asked for my wireless password again.

Are there a problems with Linux Mint 14? (aside from the annoyance of Duck Duck Go)

I would be happy to send my SSD to Linux Mint, for them to investigate, if they would promise to send it back.

Thanks,

Rob.

Have you tried the original SSD again since then? It sounds more like the connection came loose, which would explain why the techie had no problem with it.

Yes, I have tried it a number of times in both laptops - same thing happens - no disk found.

Is it possible? I'd imagine so
Is it probable? I'd imagine not so lol

I would try connecting to it externally like from your other Linux box. If you have no issues there you sjould be good, unless as mentioned before the internal connection on the laptop is bad (although I believe you tried using a different SSD in it and it worked fine). You can even do the formatting from your other Linux box to make sure it's in ext4 or whatever you use.

Hi, I know next to nothing about SSD's. I want one. It's next on my list. I just don't think it is possible for an OS to kill a hardware component like an SSD. Way too much developement there. Must be something with the firmware or software involved.

Hey, send me the drive. I absolutely guarantee I'll send it back, postage paid, after I have tested it for a few months.

I've the Intel 520 series 250gb ssd in my machine. I installed mint 14 for first time yesterday. I've had no issues so far. Although I have had the odd lockup browsing themes or playing video but dunno if this is linux or hardware related because it's my first try at mint.

I highly doubt a os would do anything to the hardware of any machine to be honest. Have you got your sata controller set up correctly in bios. Ahci/ide mode?
