Failed Installation: Mint13

Post by tinker123 »

I have a custom built system that will literally be 10 years old in a few weeks. It was running Xubuntu 11.10 with the KDE installed. I knew support was ending in April so I took a chance on installing Mint 13 Mate.

Everything looked great running it from the DVD off of my DVD/CDrom drive. I was even able to play a youtube video. I was very impressed.

I went ahead and clicked the installer.

I chose the option to leave the partitions alone, but it went ahead and overwrote it all. Still, the install happened quickly and I got a successful install message when it was done.

When I went to do a restart the BIOS message from the motherboard came up, but then only a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I could not boot Mint 13 or Xubuntu 11.10 or Xubuntu 10.10 off of the DVD drive. The drive's light lit up green, but nothing happened.

It occurs to me that I can have two problems going on simultaneously

1. My DVD drive picked this time to malfunction
2. I have a bad installation to my hard drive. My system being so old, maybe some setting in Mint 13 was not set correctly for my system.

I was thinking about getting a new computer next month anyway.

However, I am curious that if my DVD drive worked, that I could boot off of it, if this is a well know problem and if it could be fixed. Perhaps running a liveDVD, finding a file on my hard drive and manually changing some settings?

Or, is my system just too old?

I was thinking if the my problem could be identified I could put it in the appropriate bug tracker to save someone else some trouble and make linux more useful to more people

My hardware specs are below:

Does the GRUB boot menu show up? If not, try holding left shift during boot to get it to show. If that does show up, you probably have to work around your graphics card drivers not being good enough (happens if you have AMD or Nvidia). See the "If you can't boot successfully after installing Linux Mint" section on this post: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=122257. That might work for you.

Also, dmidecode is not really a readable way of sharing your system specs. Generally, the following command provides much more readable information:

No.

Upon turning my computer on I get my BIOS message telling me about my mother board, then I get a plain black screen with a blinking cursor.

I can not get the computer to boot off of a liveDVD (anymore, that worked fine before the install ) nor the hard drive.

If the computer doesn't want to boot from the DVD any longer, that sounds scary. I'd say check in the BIOS to make sure the DVD is set as the first boot device, and perhaps run any diagnostics available in the BIOS for the hard disk and perhaps the RAM.

I did all of that a number of times yesterday.

I can not get any liveCD/liveDVD to work.

At this point will your previous suggestions work?

I don't think so; if you can't get GRUB to display, and you can't get the DVD to boot, then something else seems wrong with the computer. That needs sorting out first.

I'll let you know tomorrow.

The installer on the liveDVD said Mint 13 successfully installed, so it is on my hard drive, so I'm thinking there is a chance the GRUB is there to be gotten into.

The computer fix-it shops I have gone to have refused to deal with linux boxes, but I can try another and ask them to only diagnose my DVD drives if that is an issue.

If you can manage to boot from the DVD, you can use this guide to reinstall GRUB to /dev/sda. That should hopefully fix the issue of not being able to boot from the hard disk. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot- ... _in_Ubuntu

Thanks!

I'm hoping to use the left shift key to get into GRUB on my hard drive tonight. Hopefully from there I will be able to use the first set of advice you gave me.

I use NVIDA and I think this problem is why I am not on Ubuntu 12. When I tried upgrading to that I could not boot, was told it was an NVIDA issue, so I started over with XUbuntu 11.10.

From the look of the first link/thread you sent me too, it looks like many other people have this problem.

Is Ubuntu working on modifying installers to handle this problem?

I've had some luck, but I am still not home.

I was not able to boot Mint off of the hard disk, but I was able to boot Mint off of the DVD again.

The first time I was able to get to the DVD I held the left Shift button down after leaving my BIOS. I only got a prompt
"boot: ". I hit enter, I got a menu for picking a language then Mint off of the DVD started up.

The second time I got in holding Shift down wasn't working so I also pushed a bunch of buttons. I got a menu with an option to "Start In Compatibility Mode". A login prompt came up but my username & password didn't work. However Mint went automatically into Mint after 30 seconds.

After that I brought up a command prompt and signed in as root using "sudo bash".

I then followed that second link for how to install boot-repair. I followed the "2nd option". Step 2 hung forever so I pressed "enter" and the terminal said I had stopped jobs. I rebooted the terminal and typed "boot-repair" as root. I just get a progress bar saying it is scanning my sysem ( I have a 40 GB drive ) and doing nothing else. That was about 10 minutes ago, so I think something may not be working.

I'm going to leave the computer and boot-repair running while I take a break for about an hour. Hopefully something different will happen.

If not, I'll post again tomorrow asking about how I can fix whatever it is that is preventing Mint from booting up without the assistance of the Shift key and the installaiton DVD.

boot-repair never did stop haning on that "scanning" message.

Would I have to mount my hard drive from the liveDVD, navigate there and then try to run boot-repair again?

Thanks for all of the help so far

I didn't think I would get this far.

You may try gathering some diagnostics with the boot info script, as detailed here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 62#p545770.

Which desktop environment are you using? You may already have "Disks" in your application menu, or else install gnome-disk-utility from the installation ISO. You can check the SMART data of your hard disk with Disks. This will access the logs the hard disk keeps about its own health.

I'm using (from the liveDVD ) Mint 13 Maya Mate ( the older GNOME ).

I didn't see anything called "Disks" in the "System Tools" menu nor the "Administration" menu. I did see a "Disk Utility", but when I ran it I didn't see an option for "SMART" data.

I installed gnome-disk-utility but I couldn't figure out how to run it from the command line.

Output of the bootinfoscript is attached.

The output shows you have only Linux Mint installed, but there is no boot loader installed on your MBR. Boot from the Linux Mint installation DVD, open a terminal and you should be able to install GRUB with the following commands.

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
sudo umount /mnt
Reboot and now it should hopefully boot normally.

Yes, a completely missing boot loader could account for the computer not booting at all :)

I will try what you suggested when I get home from work tonight.

I'll let you know how it works out

It worked. I can boot off of my hard drive again. Thanks for your help.

When I boots I get almost no ouput until the desktop appears. Is it easy to change the GRUB settings so that I can see messages indicating that it is doing something?

Have others had this this problem? Can I vote on a bug tracker ticket somewhere or start such a ticket for the benefit of those who come after me?

Money is tight right now and I am glad to have the option of sticking with my current computer a little longer.

Thanks again for the generous help.

Not sure what went wrong; from your earlier output it would appear during installation GRUB was installed not to the MBR but to one of your partitions. Perhaps you accidentally changed the default selection for that. It doesn't sound like a software bug and if it is, unless you can reproduce the issue there isn't much for the developers to investigate.

You can follow the instructions under "Black splash screen" here http://linuxmint.com/rel_maya.php, and enable a different splash screen. The default on Linux Mint 13 is a black screen, but you can change that to a Linux Mint image with animated dots showing it is busy loading.

If you want instead to see the boot messages, you can change the GRUB settings to do that. One option for that is to install grub customizer, which you need an additional software repository for (there are plenty of topics about this on the forums). Another option is to edit the text configuration file yourself. Assuming you are on Cinnamon, you can do so by pressing alt+f2 or opening a terminal and typing the command:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
You will find the line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Just delete both quiet and splash from that, then save and close the file. Then run the command:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
This activates your changes and upon next boot it should scroll the boot messages on your screen.
