Irregular stop of printing (crash)

Post by gebbissimo »

System
=====================================
system: Linux Mint 13 Maya xfce
Cups version: 1.5.3
printer: Canon MP510
printer driver: cnijfilter-mp510series v. 2.70-3ubuntu4

The problem
=====================================
I have a Canon MP510, which works seamlessly in WinXP. It also works in LinuxMint in principal. However, after a few (~1-20) pages the printer usually just stops printing. It always stops in between pages, not during printing a page. I have to pull the power cord of the printer in order to make it work again.
=> Any ideas? I can't even narrow it down to CUPS, the cnijfilter-mp510series driver or another aspect I maybe haven't thought of. And it's really annoying...

When printing suddenly stops:
=====================================
- lpinfo -v still shows the same (see below)
- display on printer says "printing from computer"
- If I press "cancel this print", it says "print is being canceled" and stays in that state
- If I try to turn off the printer via the power button I can't: Instead it starts blinking and I have to pull the power plug
- Assuming I print 1 page x 10 copies = 10 print jobs and the printer stops mid-way, all other jobs in "Document Print Status" are still being processed until I have an empty list

What I tried so far:
=====================================
- sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart (no effect)

- deleted printer and removed printer driver, then reinstalled driver according to instructions from http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2012/02/ins ... linux.html according to the comment "How I got this to work in Linux Mint 13:"...

- This question (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175413462/) seemed similar to the problem. So what I did was to create a custom udev rule in a file /etc/udev/rules.d/10-usbprinter.rules containing
ATTR{idVendor}=="04a9", ATTR{idProduct}=="1717", MODE:="0660", GROUP:="lp"
