Password rejected

I've just downloaded and installed the latest Debian Mate flavour of Linux Mint. The installation went fine, but when I try to boot, it asks for my username and password, but rejects them. Various solutions have been suggested in the forums so to forestall any repeats:
- there are just 2 and 1 characters respectively (no numbers, capitals..) in my username and password,
- although I'm using an azerty keyboard, the characters I use are in the same position as on a qwerty,
- I've tried using 'mint' as username and just pressing enter for password,
- I've also tried pressing 'e' during boot and putting 'nomodeset' between 'ro' and 'quiet splash'.
The computer runs Ubuntu 12.04 and WinXP without problems, and Mate runs fine from the dvd, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Any ideas, please? Thanks a lot, Kaspin

Does your password contain a special character (non-alphanumeric) by any chance? If so, that is probably the culprit:

So far, I haven't gotten any answers as to what the problem is, when there will be a fix, etc. I think this is a UP6 issue and not just the new ISO. It was not an issue in UP5 and I'm guessing not many people saw it when they just upgraded their systems in place from 5 to 6 because the default behavior is to keep the old configs instead of replace them with UP6's. Anyway, this issue, and one other weird one noted in the linked post were unfortunately deal breakers for me

Many thanks for your prompt help. I tried the suggestions from xenopeek but they didn't work in Mate, so I tried Cinnamon (32 bit) and that didn't work either. I couldn't see a line in the grub prompt edit which mentioned kernel, and "rw init=/bin/bash" as a separate line wasn't recognised. Maybe oxnak's suggestion may work as I do use a space character. I'll try this out this evening (after reinstalling cinnamon) and will report back. Thanks again, Kaspin

Problem solved! Tried oxnak's suggestion substituting a normal letter for a space character in the password and hey presto! There's probably a warning somewhere about using special characters in Debian Mint which I haven't come across. All I can say in my defence is that the space character works in Ubuntu. I don't think the behavior of not allowing special characters in passwords was by design. It was just a bug. There are some new ISOs in testing now, http://community.linuxmint.com/iso , and it looks like the issue has been fixed.
