I'm confused. Is openvpn not available in LMDE?
I'm searching in Synaptic and I do not see any openvpn packages. In particular these ones:
openvpn
network-manager-openvpn
network-manager-openvpn-gnome
This seems very odd. Are they really not in the repos?
Where are the openvpn packages?

Check if you accidentally clicked on some filter button in Synaptic... (on the left side)
Also check the availability of these packages by using apt-cache, for example:

Re: Where are the openvpn packages?
Thanks for the apt-cache tip. Strangely, I have two systems with LMDE running (both up to date) and on the other system I do see the openvpn packages I mentioned. I'll have to check the first system again tonight. Perhaps I did accidentally click some filter.
