Brother MFC-7340 with Mint 13 Mate

Has anyone been able to get both print & scan functions working in Mint 13? I had both working in a previous version of Mint, using the procedure shown in this thread:

but after running software updates, it no longer worked. Even after an upgrade to Mint 13 Mate (hard drive was dying while running the previous version), I couldn't get the same script to work. I was able to get the printer portion to work by installing it as a 'Brother HL-5170DN foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e', but no joy on the scanner. I've attached a log showing the attempt to use the script above to install under -13Mate.

If anyone has a 'just works' process to share, I'd be most grateful. To be clear, I am very much a 'user', & while I can follow directions, I will not be aware of any omitted steps that are obvious to experienced practitioners.

If no one can assist with this printer, I'd be happy to entertain recommendations for an affordable multifunction printer with laser print engine that will 'just work' in Linux. For instance, New Egg is offering a Canon MF8080Cw network printer that looks great, except that Linux support is listed as 'printer only'. I need something that I (and more importantly, my wife) can use without worrying that the next batch of software updates will kill my ability to use the printer.

so if you copy and paste

sudo dpkg -l | grep Brother

into a terminal, it will say which Brother drivers you have installed;

the user was able to download the Brother install script and run it..........

........can I suggest you try that............

..........if that works, one can explore the scanner........

......the Canon MF8080CW does have a linux driver ...........the UFR driver

that comes down as Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V250_uk_EN.tar.gz

...... you don't say if you have 32bit or 64bit...........if you are doing new installs............a 32bit install should get the UFR running well and quickly......as Canon supply 32bit .deb packages;

so as with all Canon drivers, one installs the common package and then the specific..............

......for the scanner, all the ImageClass MF devices seem to provide complete support on sane

........but you could google for confirmation .......it looks a super printing device

The system is 64 bit, & the procedure on the Brother web site doesn't seem to work with Mint 13Mate. Thanks for the links. I'll work my way through them & see if anything actually 'takes'. If nothing works, I might just order the Canon. It would be nice to have a color laser to replace the monochrome print engine in the Brother.
