Pc not Restarting after installing Catalyst 13.1 Mint14 mate

Post by phidias81 »

Hello, I'm new to linux, and I tried to follow this tutorial http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1930450 with these updates http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... tcount=664 to install my switchable intel- Ati mobility radeon HD 5470 card on a Acer 3820tg.
But after installation and restart, I got an error message and I wasn't able to start the pc. this should be the log message in \var\log\Xorg.0.log

What should I do now, possibly to install correctly the driver, or if not to clean the mess that I did?
Now to be able to restart I entered in Bios and changed from "switchable" to "discrete", and after the pc restarted.

If it can help, this is what I get doing

After trying several tutorial I thought I managed, but eventually I decided to format again :(

AMD does not support muxed hybrid graphics anymore in its driver, and if you can disable your IGP in the BIOS then it's most certainly muxed which in turn means it's unsupported. You have a choice: use only integrated graphics in Linux (no AMD driver installed, the AMD GPU can be disabled in Linux), or use only the dedicated graphics like you're doing now.

To use only integrated Intel graphics in Linux, and power down the dedicated card, please uninstall AMD drivers on Linux, then run:

Code: Select all

gksudo pluma /etc/rc.local
In that text file please put this line before the "exit 0":

Code: Select all

echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

But if i go to catalyst website, I can actually choose my graphic card series 5xxx, and there are normal drivers for linux catalyst 13.1, not legacy. Does it still mean that it s not supported?
And also it's not on the list of the unsupported cards
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... tion_Guide
And if I don+t install the drivers, choosing switchable I would use the Intel card, and choosing discrete I would use the Ati? Sorry, but I'm not that it geek. I don+t want to have only the intel card, since I also use 3d rendering programs, and I would like to use my ati card.
If not the proprietary there are any other drivers I could install successfully?
Now after reinstalling mint, I tried to install the "experimental" driver device manager, that apparently recognized the card and installed the drivers, but after restarting I'm still receiving X.org error message :( So I'm still blocked and possibly needing to format again
Edit: after choosing discrete, mint started again and I can open now catalyst center, even if I think it's an old version 9.000. I don't know if it means something or not

The 5000 series itself is supported but not in muxed hybrid configurations. In muxed hybrid laptops you can not use the AMD driver and Intel graphics at the same time: you can for example run the AMD driver without any problem if the Intel GPU is turned off in the BIOS.

So what would be the best configuration to have both working (even if not at the same time), and avoid this xorg error? Wich drivers should I install?

Since the Intel GPU will be powerful enough for most tasks, just not for gaming, you can run with the AMD GPU disabled on Linux (see my previous post on how to achieve this), but you can still use the AMD graphics in Windows if you only disable AMD in Linux and leave the BIOS to Switchable.

I'm not in Dual boot, only Linux now, even if I'm regretting my decision to pass to Linux

I tried to install also the generic radeon driver, and I still have the same problem with xorg. Is it normal?
radeon - open source driver supporting all Radeon cards. This driver has excellent 2D acceleration and compatibility with the Linux graphics stack. 3D acceleration is sufficient for desktop effects and a nice set of native Linux games. Power management is now comparable to the Catalyst driver.

The performance of radeon is nowhere as good as Catalyst drivers, if you only have radeon for your ATI GPU then you could just as well use Intel only. With intel only (and ATI GPU disabled like I told you a few posts ago) your laptop will use less power, it'll last longer on battery and become less hot.

Ok, tahnk you, I will follow your suggestion, and in case I will need to have more 3d performances I could make another partition where to install the ati drivers.

Back on this topic. Are there any chances I could manage to install the switchable card with these procedure? It doesn't look too easy to me, and it's referring to fedora and other catalyst driver, so before wasting half a day maybe somebody will stop me :)

FGLRX patched with VGA_SWITCHEROO HOW TO :

I've prepared a how-to explaining the necessary steps to install the Catalyst 10.12 patched with VGA_SWITCHEROO allowing the ATI card either to be powered off with the bios option set to switchable, keeping the Intel GPU active or only the discrete for max performance. It is important to highlight the necessity to switch between xorg.confs tailored for each card since only the kernel module is patched not the fglrx X11 driver (no source code). I doubt that ATI will release a switchable linux driver but who knows

It may be necessary to adjusts the xorg.confs for other systems. I have not prepared a script to switch the files for I have to switch the cards manually via BIOS config but fell free to optimize it.

That's about Catalyst 10.12, which is over two years ago. AMD drivers used to have some support for switchable (muxed hybrid) graphics in the past, but not anymore. Catalyst 10.12 mentioned there, probably pre-dates that support drop. Todays driver may not be able to cooperate with vga_switcheroo anymore.

Also, this how-to does not give you real switchable graphics. You'll still have to restart X to switch between GPU's, or even reboot.
