SOLVED! Mint14 (64bit) does not find network printer

Post by goetzkluge »

All with Mate, I run Linux mint on 3 computers in my home network. With one computer I now have trouble.
Computer #1: Linuxmint 13, 32bit: Network printer/scanner can be accessed via router
Computer #2: Linuxmint 14, 32bit: Network printer/scanner can be accessed via router
Computer #3: Linuxmint 14, 64bit: Network printer/scanner *cannot* be accessed anymore.

One month ago it the computer 3 could access scanner and printer without problems via the router.

The printer is a HP Officejet 4500. I can ping it successfully from all 3 computers. So the Ethernet connection is ok.

On all computers the firewall is off.

When trying to add a printer, the printer configuration tool finds the printer in case of computer 1 and 2, but the computer 3 with the 64bit Mint 14 doesn't neither find the printer nor the scanner.

Here the /var/log/syslog

Yesterday I updated the software (110 files) on Computer 3 after a pause of 1 month. Last printing and scanning from that computer was one month ago. Is there some trouble after cups upgrade with 64bit Mint 14?

Best regards from Munich
Goetz

PS (edit 2013-03-04 20:19):

Simpler description: Mint14 (64bit): netw. printer not found

Post by goetzkluge »

Perhaps the error description was too complicated. Put simple, it looks like this:
- Previously Mint 14 (64 bit) found the Officejet 4500 networkplrinter/scannerin my home network.
- Now it doesn't find then printer/scanner anymore although I can ping the printer/scanner successfully.
- Another Mint 14 (32 bit) computer still finds the printer/scanner.

Could there be a special problem with Mint 14 (64 bit) after an SW upgrade (March 4th)?
Did others experience the same trouble?

Re: Mint14 (64bit) does not find network printer anymore

I tried to upgrade HPLIP-3.12.6 to HPLIP-3.13.2 as described in
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... xmint.html

In step 4 I got the error message:

Code: Select all

configure: error: cannot find net-snmp support (or --disable-network-build)
I installed all packages containing ...net-snmp..., but that doesn't help.

try using the cups web interface.
type localhost:631 into your browser.
select 'Adding printers and classes' - when you are asked for a name try your user name but if this doesn't work use 'root' and you normal password.
This should list your printer and let you install it in the normal way.
Then close the browser and check that the printer is in 'printers'
Hope that this helps.

Hi Guy!

I've got a networked printer HP PhotoSmart C309g-m and hesitated if I should upgrade my HPLIP; I also saw the possibility to upgrade, even the HPLIP tells me there's a new version but … .at the end of Step 2 in the upgrade process I saw:

quote

Linux Mint 10, 11, 12 and 13

unquote

Which made me hesitant to go through with it; my printer is seen and works ok in Linux Nadia Mint 14 and don't want to break things….
Upgrade or not; if I'm not totally convinced I'm not doing it….

Goodluck anyways!
Grtz.

net-snmp issue: Router bug?

Post by goetzkluge »

@gosport_gaz:
You put me on the right track!
The localhost:631 advice helped me to learn something. The printer/scanner still could be found. It was a SNMP problem. I studied http://localhost:631/help/network.html a bit.
I installed snmp in order to be able to run snmpwalk.

Code: Select all

snmpwalk -Cc -v 2c -c public 192.168.0.102 | tee snmpwalk.log
Timeout: No Response from 192.168.0.102
Aha! (But ping works.)
So I got desparate and just switched off and on my router.
Now the printer works :-) :-) :-)
But the scanner was not found, because I had removed hplip. I reinstalled hplip and also reinstalled the printer with a driver from hplip.
Now scanner and printer work fine.

So the router was the culprit.
