I know that Ubuntu 12.04 supports the 360 controller / gamepad but for some reason it does not work properly in Linux Mint 14. I have the same issue that this guy has... http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=116836
Is there any way I can submit a bug or something to the Mint developers? With Steam now out, we need 360 controller support in Mint to play games.

Re: Xbox 360 controller support
I got my Saitek controller to work just fine a few years ago. The bigger question is why aren't you using a mouse and keyboard? (if you think you can play TF2 well with a gamepad, you are in for a big surprise)
Re: Xbox 360 controller support
I've been trying to play "The Cave" and I think that really needs a controller.
Re: Xbox 360 controller support
Search for "jstest-gtk" @ software center - worked for me. It even lets you play games with wine (I'm using crossover) in multiplayer with 4 controllers.
