vlc sound problems with playing disc from folder - avi okay

Hi,

I am having problems playing a DVD backed-up to a folder on vlc media player - there is no sound at all. vlc behaves fine when playing avi files.

I've tried using GNOME player to open the folder, which is fine with the sound, but has issues with the subtitles & menus.

Please can anyone suggest anything?
