I have tried the two first options offered, none was working....
Until I did: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The debian package system has its mysteries, I never had this kind of problem with RPM packages...
May be Clem or his team will step in and figure out the solution?

-- Note --
Two first options which do no work are:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-4-0
sudo apt-get update

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update

That's funny... I just tried the normal procedure you described (without upgrading first), and as described here, and it worked fine for me. I'm using a relatively recent install, though... Maybe something else needed to be updated first on your system?

Well:
a few things were updated, most notably the Linux Kernel to : 3.5.0-25-generic
But Mint 14, had already a recent kernel.
Does LibreOffice 4 require a very recent kernel, and system libraries? Perhaps...

Upgraded old Libre Office versions to 4.0 several times at work.
At first you have to remove old libreoffice, use this:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*

Then download latest version of Libre Office and install:
Code: Select all
tar xvzf LibreOffice_4.0.1_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
cd LibreOffice_4.0.1_Linux_x86-64_deb
cd DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

And now you have latest Libre Office :)

I just tried to help my son upgrade to L.O. 4 on his PC, and the same thing happened that happened to Andre---so I'm glad it came up here.

The problem was that my son wasn't keeping his system up-to-date. Unlike other OSs, Linux never bugs you about updates; it just keeps the little icon in the system tray and assumes you'll open the Update Manager now and then. Well, ahem, this is a good example of why to do that. :?)
