Best way to partition two HDD (msata SSD and sata HDD)

Post by lexeme »

Hi, I would like to install LM14 Cin onto a computer with two HDD.
I have a 120gb msata SSD and a 1tb 5400rpm HDD.
I'd like to install the OS onto the msata SDD and use the other 1tb HDD as storage.
Could some please tell me how to go about setting up a partition table for this?

Thanks

The sysem is a Dell XPS 15 L521X
Memory 16 GB
Processor Intel® Core™ i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
Graphics Intel® Ivybridge Mobile

You can create an ext4 partition on the whole SSD using GParted, and on the HDD: at the end a swap partition that is just a bit bigger than your amount of RAM, and an ext4 partition on the rest of the HDD.
After creating partitions, in the installer, you can use them this way: double-click the partition on the SSD, and select / as mount point, then double-click the ext4 partition on the HDD and set /home as mount point.
At the bootloader, you should select your SSD (and not any partition on it), so /dev/sda or /dev/sdb (whichever is your SSD) instead of things like /dev/sda1.

Thanks AlbertP,
I'll try it tonight.
Just to be sure I've got it right format both drives ext4 with GParted from liveCD
on the SSD: / as mount point, bootloader (no partitions)
on the HDD: /home as mount point, swap partition ( just a bit bigger than your amount of RAM).

Thanks

That's right. I suppose you mean with "no partition": bootloader not on a partition.

Hi AlbertP, that's correct.
It seems to have all worked. I just had to change where the computer booted form in the bios and all is good.
Thanks for your help!
