Automatic login doesn't work with external monitor

Hi,

I am using an external monitor as my only display due to a problem with the laptop it's attached to. Since I started doing that, automatic login hasn't worked.

I think my settings are correct. Under Login Window Preferences -> Security, "Enable Automatic Login" is checked and my name is in the textbox for it. On a tip from another post, I also added this for my /etc/mdm/mdm.conf:
Code: Select all
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=noahplusplus

It didn't help. Ideas? For what it's worth, on X startup, the screen flickers a few times in a way that resembles a sequence of virtual terminal switches. It then gives a system beep just before displaying a distorted-resolution graphical login screen.
