It must really suck to see ads in your start menu like that.

Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
That can be turned off in about 5 seconds by going to the privacy settings and hitting an "off button" ...that is the amazon lens results on the "dash" (search) you are looking at...once turned off, you don't get that...TehGhodTrole wrote:It must really suck to see ads in your start menu like that.
Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
According to Clement, Ubuntu is a great distribution, no matter how badly Canonical treats its community. So it can't be...

Yes but that's what we are trying to find out about by this vote What linuxers like and dislike
Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
I like ubuntu and i like mint...i started on ubuntu, switched to mint for quite a long time, but now i am back with ubuntu again... Cinnamon is very nice but i like the unity desktop and i think today's ubuntu is pretty cool looking (much nicer then it was years ago when i started with it)...
There always seems to be a lot of ubuntu dislike posted on the mint forums...just remember, underneath mint IS ubuntu....so it's like saying you love your shirt but you hate your undershirt

Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
Mint is based on Ubuntu (let's keep the LMDE version out) - yes.
Thus, it is "Ubuntu improved".
Like, a shirt (Ubuntu) with a neat look & feel.

Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
I spent some years running both, but now I run Ubuntu and not Mint. Which one is better depends on the user's point of view. Both are great distros. "Fanboyism" is silly and pointless.craig10x wrote:I like ubuntu and i like mint...i started on ubuntu, switched to mint for quite a long time, but now i am back with ubuntu again... It's a free world man Most Linux Mint users came from a Ubuntu background and so they had to hate Ubuntu to look for alternatives. But Mint is not just a Ubuntu. It has a Debian edition too called LMDE. And even if it is based on Ubuntu, it is still a separate OS with its own merits or otherwise Ubuntu would be a Debian Mint has maintained a unique look and funtionality especially when Cinnamon came out. Ubuntu was a great OS but since the introduction of Unity It has lost much of its user base We have to admit that Linux Mint is the best distribution ever out and even the best OS. Though developed by a small team with limited resources, Mint managed to mantain an international fame and an unchallenged reliability Ubuntu,on the other hand, kept testing new grounds and lost its reputation in the processcraig10x wrote:I like ubuntu and i like mint...i started on ubuntu, switched to mint for quite a long time, but now i am back with ubuntu again... Debian's the best -- for me. The next guy might say the best distro is openSUSE, or Arch, or Fedora, or Slackware. Or even Ubuntu. Who cares, it's all Linux. Maybe Mint has the loudest cheerleaders.
Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
That seems to be the case, Malspa....mint has some of the loudest cheerleaders for the distro i would say
Have to take issue with what he said about ubuntu losing a lot of it's user base because of unity...not so...oh, sure at first there was a lot of crying on the ubuntu forums...(because it was different from what they were use to and you know how many people hate change)...but eventually, most realize that Unity was actually pretty cool and gave it another chance and now they absolutely love it...I should know, that happened to me
Also, Unity has been really improving a lot since it's introduction (over each new ubuntu version)...
As is said, Cinnamon is nice...mint is an excellent distro but so is ubuntu...
Also, one does not actually have to leave ubuntu to get other desktop environments, there is kubuntu, lubuntu, xubuntu, and so forth and you can also install
cairo dock session or cinnamon session or gnome 3 session and soon even consort desktop (from ikey's Solus Os)...
But i understand the "mint-mania" as i said, i used mint pretty regularly for about 2 years before i switched over to ubuntu again...

Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
So true. Once you've installed a few DEs or WMs, the default one isn't necessarily all that important anymore.craig10x wrote:Also, one does not actually have to leave ubuntu to get other desktop environments, there is kubuntu, lubuntu, xubuntu, and so forth and you can also install

Mint is good, and I wouldn't hesitate to say so if I was asked. But to say that it's "the best," or that it's better than some other distro, well... I've spent a lot of time with a lot of different distros, and with each one, there are good reasons why one person would think it's great and someone else wouldn't like it. I just don't think there is a "best" Linux distro; just a lot of different ones, and any one of them might be the perfect fit for a particular user. It's like saying that your favorite type of flower is the best flower ever. Matter of opinion; plenty would disagree.
Re: Linux Mint Is A Better Distro Than Ubuntu
What attracts users to Mint is that sense of completeness, elegance, practicality and customizability. And that's the perfect combination for a successful OS. Mint is more user-oriented than any other OS.The community decides on many issues including names, looks and functionality. That's a a fact. For instance it was me who asked Clem to include a splash screen and a netspeed for Mate in LM 13 Maya and he did. Unity is an extravagance and very impractical. Ubuntu tells its users what they should want and that's very undemocratic. No surprise it is losing its ranking on Distrowatch for other distros like Mageia which is a mess but still better than this purple Ubuntu. On Unity you can't even change the look of your desktop. It's either that dash and launcher or that launcher and dash Why would any wise guy make his PC look like a tablet?!! And to be very generous with Unity I would say, quoting Linus Torvalds, "AN UNHOLY MESS"

So actually it just fails to run Cinnamon for you?
(Regarding the "archaic" login screen: You can change it, just as you can on Mint.)
