Cinnamon For Dummies

Post by mykec »

Hi. I decided last year to stick with Mint 11 until this Unity/Cinnamon/MATE dust settled because I don't have the luxury of experimenting with them at my leisure and could not afford to interrupt my workflow with failures and radical revisions.

I'm still with Mint 11 on my own desktop but recently upgraded my wife's PC from Mint 7(!) to Mint 13 as Mint 7 was becoming unbearable for her to use in the absence of all the updates and her inability to obtain a current version of Firefox.

Where is there a good guide for learning one's way around the new Cinnamon UI? We have noticed that all icons align to the left in the bottom panel and we cannot find a way to fix that. For the past 10 years I have used both top and bottom panels on my desktop and I've been happy with my freedom to position my panel icons and apps wherever I want them to be. Seems like that freedom has been lost with Cinnamon. Yes? No?

I'm doing a Mint 14 Cinnamon guide, it will be ready in a few days when I get my finger out.

Yes, bit undecided whether it should be a distro neutral Cinnamon guide or a Mint 14 Cinnamon guide, and whether it should be posted in here or as part of a new (unofficial) Mint blog.

+ I'm lazy :D

I'd personally say a distro-agnostic user guide for Cinnamon, only because almost everything else is covered in the normal Mint user guide. I'm being a little bit selfish though, as I run Debian-based stuff instead of Ubuntu.

If it were to be distro agnostic, then it might be good to include details from the download page: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61. I would add that in LMDE you can use the Mint repo to install it and there is a cinnamon package in Sid that is currently the newest version.

Edit: Forgot to include the debian packages link: http://packages.debian.org/search?suite ... s=cinnamon. It's still missing nemo, but otherwise it works and is up to date (1.6.7-1).
