Volume in web page and VLC media player

I am using USB booting 64bit Mint, Nadia, not sure which version number and win7 Ultimate iinstalled on drive. AMD 2.2ghz sempron, 4g ram 800mhz, Nvidia GT 430 OC edition, 500g and 640g hdd's on a Biostar mb. I am having some issues with my sound using an .avi format movie in VLC and Firefox videos from youtube or any video site, I watch HULU a lot. I can play and hear mp3's using Amarok just fine, I'm running HDMI to 32" vizio tv. I think i'm using KDE. I've ran the test from the audio interface and the test shows I have sound coming through. The audio just won't work in VLC player while watching a movie or a video on FF. By the way, this Mint has not been installed to the hdd yet, I am using a 64g USB thumb drive I made with LILI using persistence.
