How can I use Cinnamon panel menu in gnome 2

Post by rajkumar »

Hello,
THis is first time I have installed Cinnamon Mint 16
I have activated gnome 2 sesion while login so I can use one of the emerald theme.
But this has disabled Cinnamon Mint panel(nice trasperent like Windows 7) and made it look like gnome.
Is is possible to get the Cinnmon panel while keeping emerald theme?
Below is my config:
Linux rajvista 3.5.0-17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:31:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thank you
Raj.

Hello Raj and welcome to Linux Mint,

I may be wrong but I don't think what your trying to do is possible. as Cinnamon is built on Gnome 3 and gnome 2 will not support it.
the closest you may come is to install the Mate desktop which in Mint has the mint panel installed.
good luck :)

That's true !

You're trying to use a Gnome 3 "applet" on a Gnome 2 "system". That's impossible.
Try to use Cinnamon and look here for more themes: http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes

Some are very nice

there's an option to use an applet under Cinnamon which gives you back the good old Gnome2 look and feel: http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/51. I think this is what you need.

The themes page on the cinnamon spiced website doesn't show an emerald theme... Just plain Cinnamon and the Gnome2 applet can do the trick for you is my opinion.

My apologies for delayed reply and reporting incorrect Mint version, its Mint 14.

Code: Select all

Distributor ID:	LinuxMint
Description:	Linux Mint 14 Nadia
Release:	14
Codename:	nadia
Thank you all for help. I will start in opposite way, keep gnome3 session with Cinnamon panel and see if I can apply some theme to change window colors/title and decoration. Most of Cinnamont themes just change tone of pannel and leaves window color gray for all windows whichs makes it difficult to see active and inactive window.
I will take a look at Mate Desktop as well.
I would like to retain my window decoration below without loosing the Cinnamon's sleek pannel with abillity to search programs,

Mint rocks! :D

Raj.
