Banshee media keys under XFCE4

Postby Orbital_sFear on Thu Mar 01, 2012 8:52 pm

I'm new to LMDE, long time Ubuntu user that finally got fed up with Unity/Gnome3.

After upgrading to LMDE, I couldn't get my Microsoft Natural keyboard keys to control Banshee. After some tinkering, I figured out a solution.

Open Settings -> Keyboard -> Application Shortcuts.

Click add, add the following:

qdbus org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.banshee /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.PlayPause
qdbus org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.banshee /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Next
qdbus org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.banshee /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Previous

Now you can conduct basic media player controls from your keyboard's media keys.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Or you could just go the simpler route ...

banshee --next
banshee --previous
banshee --stop
banshee --toggle-playing
the beauty of linux is that the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want it to go.

Thanks, I didn't know banshee could accept the commands like that.

Both ways work, but the way Orbital_sFear suggested is much faster. If someone wants to implement a hotkey to Stop too, here is the command using qdbus:

qdbus org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.banshee /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Stop
