No panel in Cinnamon, but after ctrl-alt-del new login it appear

Post by Bikush »

Hi, I have a similar problem with cinnamon so I thought I should post here.

When I log into Mint I only get the desktop background and the mouse pointer. I tried restarting cinnamon through the console (which had no window around it btw.) I got a message:

Code: Select all

libGL error: failed to load driver swrast
libGL error: try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details
window manager warning: unable to register authentication agent:GDBus. Error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: an authehtication agent already exists fot rhe given subject (polkit_error_quark 0)
On top of that, network is not working (ethernet).
Returning to the login screen with ctrl+alt+del works fine and there are no issues with the login windows/panels.

So, how can I try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose and how can I help libGL to load swrast? Or is the problem somewhere else?

Please let me know if I should open another topic for this.

Made you your own topic. Not sure if those errors are related to your issue. Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about such issues can pitch in here.

Hello there,

Today I had the same problem. The only things I could see on my desktop were: Computer, home and Trash. Terminals and apps launched from terminal do not have a window (no minimise, maximise and close). Re-login and rebooting did not help. Google searches led me to:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/http://foru ... 8&t=108778
http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=92480
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/401

The last one set me on the right track for a solution that worked for me. Basically what the last one tells you to do is to add the command "gnome-panel" to the list of startup applications (in Menu > Preferences > Startup Applications). This however gave me an unfamiliar panel upon reboot. Inspired by this I replaced "gnome-panel" with "cinnamon --replace" and that did the trick upon reboot.

I am however still curious as to why this happened and I also would like to know how to fix this problem in a normal way without adding another startup application. For the sake of completion I will now list details of my system and the last few operations I did before running into this problem:

System: Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64 bit, Dell XPS 15 L502X, NVIDIA 540M, using Bumblemee + primus for onboard/dedicated GPU switch

Recent operations:
- Added PPA for the Bluefish editor and installed Bluefish
- Created a .bashrc in ~/ (did not have a .bashrc before)
- Ran updates from the update manager (see updates marked 2013.04.02 in figure)

It's easy-peasy guys simply delete your /.config then logout and you'll be fine :D :D

Brahim...that did not work at all. It actually reproduced the problem with my background set back to the default like a fresh install. Luckily I did not delete ~/.config I just renamed it, this way I could place it back. For future reference I advice against deleting the ~/.config folder. If you want to try this, rename the folder instead of deleting it.

Same here. On restart I get the welcome window and the Computer and Home Icons. But no panels, no menu.

I went to "Computer/'File System'/usr/bin" and started gnome-terminal which had no window decoration. Apparently no window manager was running. I manually started gnome-wm & in the terminal, which gave me gnome windowmanager and an simple linux mint menu.

When I try to start cinnamon --replace i get:

Code: Select all

libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.

(cinnamon:2382): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to find suitable fbconfig for the GLX context: Failed to find any compatible fbconfigs
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.
Last thing I did is installing Linux Mint updates.

My system is installed brand-new Linux Mint 14 64 Bit Cinnamon from DVD. PC with Pentium and NVIDIA GeForce 550 with NVIDIA proprietary drivers installed. Worked like a charm until the software update.

Only extra software I installed was Dropbox, because this exists now in a flavour for cinnamon. I installed via Synaptics as the Software Manager immediately hangs itself up, even after a fresh install. Nevermind that, I love Synaptic and come from Ubuntu 10.10 (the last usable, not Unity Ubuntu IMHO) so I am happy with Synaptics being an integral part of Mint.

It's a shame it did not work for you. I usually try some random non-destructive stuff until one works. Try rebooting and use "cinnamon --replace" in a terminal right from the start. If that does not work press ctrl + alt + del to return to the login screen and try different sessions. Retry "cinnamon --replace" in those sessions.

I do not know whether it already has been done but this problem should be filed as a bug, because I have seen several threads on this issue. For what I have seen it is affecting both Maya and Nadia (at least the 64 bit versions, 32 bit I am not sure about).

Also it could be very constructive that users suffering from this problem upload a screenshot from the last few updates performed in the software manager (it keeps track), like I did 2 posts back. This way we can see whether there is a common denominator.

Thanks CaluVerde,

no approach yet worked. I'll re-install now but saved the /var/log/mintUpdate.history to post it here. I don't seem to be able to attach the history file tp the post, so here is the part of yesterdays update (i reversed the order with tac, so the last update is in the first row):

After starting Linux Mint in --recovery mode from grub I dropped to the root shell and re-installed the newest NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.44.run on top of the old one and hence cinnamon works again. Why? I have no clue but hey: it works again
